Holy snook catch on the year!!!

Or should I say holy on the money cast of the year!

Wait until you see this video below (filmed on my iPhone 7)

Here’s the backstory…

While we were having our Salt Strong “Monday Company Meeting,” I happened to be standing by the glass window and couldn’t help but notice that there was a snook sitting right down near the water’s edge waiting to ambush the bait fish that are known to roll through the area (turns out there were two snook).

I mentioned the snook to Luke and we all agreed it was worth ending our meeting early to see if we could get a cast on the snook without spooking it.

So we told Tony (who was still on the conference call line while we debated what lure to use) that we’d call him back after we did some snook balcony fishing (probably the first time that had ever been said on a business conference call).

Thankfully we had a rod ready, and Luke got the honors to see if he could catch a snook from three stories high.

Not only were we 3 stories up, but it is a pretty long distance from where we were to where the snook was and there was a tall palm tree in the way.

But Luke had his magic touch, and after a money cast that had the lure go just a few feet in front of the snook, a botched second cast, his third cast had the lure bounce just inches from the snook’s nose, and the snook couldn’t resist!

Thankfully we had three of us there as Will was able to run down, catch the rod, and land the snook.

Talk about an amazing way to end your Monday morning meeting.

Enjoy the first ever snook fishing from a balcony (video shown below).

Rob Fordyce is back!

Yep, the fishing show, Seahunter, is back for Season 2.

From the looks of the trailer, this will be another awesome year.

You got to love the fact that a professional angler like Rob is still all about learning and teaching.

There are so many fishermen out there that think they know it all and give up learning and you’ve got a humble guy like this who has fished almost daily for a big chunk of his life and he’s still out there soaking up new tips.

Looking forward to seeing season 2 of Seahunter.

Keep up the great work, Rob.

This one was tough to watch, while at the same time I couldn’t stop watching…

YouTube user “Fishing Infinite” was attempting to catch his first redfish on a fly rod at his grandparent’s house in Charleston, and he learned a valuable lesson about jumping in a marsh (and handling redfish).

We post this video not to make fun of this guy, but to save anyone else from making the same mistake.

I know from personal experience that it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of landing a fish, but it’s also important to think through your approach (especially if you are fishing by yourself).

The guy is lucky he escaped with just a few oyster infections and some ruined shoes… it could have been a whole lot worse.

As for the redfish, he claims it swam off happily.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but it looks like it could be a slot redfish. Not sure why you wouldn’t just eat him for dinner after all of that?

However, it did look more like a muddy catfish after the fight so I guess I can’t blame him…

Either way, I hope everyone can learn something from this. I’m sure this guy did.

Enjoy.

Thanks to Curry Belk for sending this over.

As a Floridian, I can barely comprehend ice fishing, let alone fishing under the ice.

But thanks to the crazy “fishing Finns” I now have a pretty good idea what it’s like to fish under the ice.

This video is nuts!

If you watch carefully you will understand just how much time and effort went into capturing all of this.

Filming upside down means they are fighting gravity and buoyancy all while trying to stay balanced.

Amazing!

It definitely messed with my mind.

Here is the explanation from MentalFloss:

“When you notice that the air bubbles “fall down,” you’ll realize these divers are actually walking upside down on the underside of the ice on a frozen lake. This becomes possible when they inflate their gear with air, which increases their buoyancy and makes them go up. A little fine tuning, and they can simulate gravity upside down. They can do that as long as they have air in their bottles, because the water pressure around them is supporting their entire bodies from all sides.”

What did you think of it?

Let me know in the comments.

Enjoy.

Ever had the desire to burn fishing gear?

Me either.

But then again I don’t live up north where I get iced in and start having crazy thoughts…

Apparently not being able to fish can cause you to try outrageous experiments. Haha.

Either way, I have to admit that I was pretty curious when I saw this video come in my feed from the angler known as “Flair”.

He said he was going to heat up a knife to a glowing 1,000 degrees and cut through fishing tackle such as lures, rods, and even a fishing reel.

So I couldn’t resist watching it.

Check out his results below.

Do NOT try this at home kids.

It’s Barbie rod time!

In particular, a Barbie snook catching compilation from good ol’ Team Googan.

We hadn’t seen much from Team Googan after he made multiple appearances on Salt Strong last year with videos such as:

  • “Watch This Kayak Angler Fight A Tarpon On A Spiderman Rod!” (see it here)
  • “Angler Throws One-Handed Cast Net Pancake While Talking On The Phone” (see it here)

But he’s back, and this time with some great snook footage all while using kid’s fishing rods.

He even has one rod snap in half!

Enjoy.

Note: If you do attempt to catch snook on Barbie rods, do not use the line that comes standard with the reel (it will most likely end up as trash in the water). You will need to re-spool with heavier test line.

Have you heard of the XPLOR Project yet?

If not, you will.

We just interviewed Frankie Marion (the creator of XPLOR) about his wild idea of surviving on an uninhabited island for a couple weeks, and we were blown away by this amazing trip.

The best part is that Frankie got a ton of footage that he put into ten different short videos showing their adventure in Andros.

Here are the rules for the XPLOR trips:

xplor project andros

  1. All protein must be taken from the see using a fly rod or hand spear
  2. No resupplying
  3. No turning back

Check out all ten of the episodes from Andros below.

If you are anything like me, you will be excited to hear that Frankie just finished up another trip and he will be releasing footage soon. It is them living in a remote area of the Louisiana Delta for weeks in some pretty bad weather.

Conclusion

If you can’t afford to take two to four weeks off work to do an extreme fishing adventure, then the next best thing is watching someone else do it…

Great job by Frankie Marion and the team over at XPLOR Project on their exciting work.

More of us need to get outside for long periods of time like this.

It’s good for the sou.

Ever eaten stingray before?

Most anglers just throw back stingrays (or use them or shark bait or goliath grouper bait).

But did you know they actually taste pretty good?

Check out Capt. Brant and his family doing a taste test on stingray below!

If Capt. Brant looks familiar, he is the same guy that taste-tested a lizardfish on our site last month (you can see that video here).

So what is the craziest thing you’ve eaten from the ocean?

Ever tried eating lizardfish?

Considered one of the top “inshore junkfish” (up there with catfish and puffer fish), most anglers hate reeling up lizardfish.

And I’ve certainly never seen anyone keep one to eat it.

But Captain Brant in Northwest Florida loves trying new fish.

He recently tried mullet roe, needlefish, and saltwater catfish.

So are you wondering how the lizardfish tastes?

I won’t ruin it for.

Let’s just say it shocked the heck out of me.

Florida might have fewer lizardfish after enough anglers seen this video…

Enjoy.
