We’ve all probably thought about quitting our job to pursue our passion for fishing, but how many people actually pull the trigger?

Well, this guy, Robert Field, decided a year ago that he didn’t belong in a traditional office anymore.

His believed his love for kayak fishing was his calling, so he quit his 9-5 and has been pursuing a full-time living as a kayak fisherman.

Here is Robert with a monster fish on during his first year as a full-time kayak fisherman.

Wondering how life is panning out for him since he took a risk and started fishing full time?

Well, not only has Robert been able to travel the world to catch fish, but he also has a successful kayak channel on Scout.com (called YakFish.tv), and he is president of the kayak bass series.

And you can’t beat his tagline: “Pursuing what matters.”

Keep up the great work Robert.

Enjoy these highlights from 2016.

Have you heard of the XPLOR Project yet?

If not, you will.

We just interviewed Frankie Marion (the creator of XPLOR) about his wild idea of surviving on an uninhabited island for a couple weeks, and we were blown away by this amazing trip.

The best part is that Frankie got a ton of footage that he put into ten different short videos showing their adventure in Andros.

Here are the rules for the XPLOR trips:

xplor project andros

  1. All protein must be taken from the see using a fly rod or hand spear
  2. No resupplying
  3. No turning back

Check out all ten of the episodes from Andros below.

If you are anything like me, you will be excited to hear that Frankie just finished up another trip and he will be releasing footage soon. It is them living in a remote area of the Louisiana Delta for weeks in some pretty bad weather.

Conclusion

If you can’t afford to take two to four weeks off work to do an extreme fishing adventure, then the next best thing is watching someone else do it…

Great job by Frankie Marion and the team over at XPLOR Project on their exciting work.

More of us need to get outside for long periods of time like this.

It’s good for the sou.

Let’s face it, not all of us will spear a 55lb grouper in our lifetimes…

In fact, most of us (including me) would be thrilled to catch a 55lb grouper on a rod and reel, let alone spear one in 50+ feet of water.

Note: Luke released a really helpful “How To Make A Grouper Rig” linked here if you haven’t yet seen it.

So when I saw this Italian diver named Sebastiano Rosalba sneaking up on a big grouper and then planting his spear right in his head, I had to share it.

I can’t think of a better way to live vicariously through an amazing spearfishing feat like this than watching it from his GoPro view.

Well done!

Enjoy.

If you asked the average person what is the most exciting thing to go on in November and December in Louisiana, they would say, “LSU football…”

But real fishermen know that November and December mean lunker redfish in Louisiana.

Check out William Lattimore’s recent trip to Venice, Louisiana where he and his buddy caught bull redfish until their arms were tired.

Ever eaten stingray before?

Most anglers just throw back stingrays (or use them or shark bait or goliath grouper bait).

But did you know they actually taste pretty good?

Check out Capt. Brant and his family doing a taste test on stingray below!

If Capt. Brant looks familiar, he is the same guy that taste-tested a lizardfish on our site last month (you can see that video here).

So what is the craziest thing you’ve eaten from the ocean?

Let us know in the comments.

The Costa Rica Inshore Grand Slam…

Permit.

Bonefish.

Tarpon.

All landed on a fly rod in the same trip.

Most of the locals in this part of the Costa Rican jungle say it’s never been done.

You see, these waters are known primarily for their monster tarpon, but rarely do you find permit and bonefish (unless you know where to look).

Check out the amazing trailer by Capture Adventures Media & Anglers Eye Media as they film anglers Mark Martin and Alex Beck trying to complete the very first Costa Rican Grand Slam.

I know I will be tuning into the IF4 (Fly Fish Film Festival) to see the full film.

How about you?

Enjoy.

Ever consider the tarpon as a killer?

According to fishing show, “River Monsters” with Jeremy Wade, a local Nicaraguan fisherman was most likely killed by a tarpon.

How?

From the tarpon skyrocketing and either landing on the angler or knocking him out with his tail.

At either rate, it’s not that hard to imagine someone dying that is all alone out on a small raft while chasing 100+ pound tarpon.

If a 150-pound silver king landed on you and smacked you hard enough with his tail to knock you out (and knock you in the water), you could easily drown.

Either way, this is probably a good thing for anglers because now most of America is deathly afraid of tarpon… more for us.

Check out the footage from the show below and watch this tarpon fight with everything it had until the very end.

Enjoy.

What do you do when you live in a small harbour town with no place to build a traditional boat ramp?

You improvise by investing in heavy duty tractors that can launch your boats right off the beach!

This is the Shelly Beach Ski-Boat Club in South Africa.

They love boating, they love fishing, and they love making an entrance…

Make sure you stick around until the end to see how they bring the boats back up!

Awesome.

Can you imagine having to do this every time you went fishing?

I bet they’ve seen a few accidents…

Have you ever caught a freshwater redfish?

And I don’t mean “brackish” water redfish, I’m talking pretty much pure freshwater.

Although it’s obviously not as common as catching a redfish near the mouths of where freshwater meets saltwater, redfish have been known to venture past the brackish blends and be found alongside bass and bluegills.

Check out the experience the “Texas Redfish Hunter” recently had while trying to catch bass.

The irony was he had been out in the saltwater the past few trips and was skunked when it came to catching reds.

Pretty awesome.

Enjoy.
