If you have spent any amount of time underwater trying to spear a fish, then you know that getting a perfect shot isn’t as easy as some of the videos on YouTube make it seem…

And in most cases, it is you (the hunter) having to track down and pursue your fish… not the other way around.

But it’s always great to see videos like this where a nice fish comes right at you out of the blue, and then slowly moves his body to give you the perfect shot.

Well done!

If you stick around until the end of the video, you will get a glimpse of how big this fish was.

Enjoy.

Some spear anglers dive down deep to spear their favorite fish…

While others lay low in a few feet of water and wait for the perfect moment to ambush their favorite fish…

Meet Manos Koum, a spearfisherman that falls in the second camp…

And in this video, Manos patiently waits in just a few feet of water for a perfect kill shot on an unsuspecting predator fish…

Boy, I would say he got it!

I think this even surprised the heck out of him!

Even better is he gets a 2-for-1 fresh sardine that he could use as bait as the fish still had the bait in it’s mouth!

Here is a note from Manos on the type of fish it was in the video:

“It was a Lichia amia or Garrick is a species of marine fish in the Carangidae family, and is native to the Mediterranean and the coastal waters of western Africa to the coastal waters of eastern South Africa.”

Call me old-fashioned, but the last place that I want to be when chumming for bull sharks is in the water!

I have spent a considerable amount of time under the surface, and only a few sharks really get my attention and cause me to slowly move closer to the boat… and one of them in the bull shark.

That being said, kudos to you brave crazy divers that not only chum for bull sharks while diving, but then get close enough to the bull shark where you can pluck a cobia off its back!

Nuts!

Speaking of nuts, one of the divers in this cobia spearfishing video (and the guy who edited the video – our friend Joey) is also the same diver in the Must-Watch Viral video called, “This Is What Happens When A Triggerfish Gets The Ultimate Revenge On A Diver. OUCH!”

Amberjack – 0

Spearfisherman – 1

Watch as this amberjack comes in WAY too close for a curious look at a spear tip.

Talk about an ideal encounter for the diver… just sit there on the bottom and wait for one fish crazy enough to come within inches of his spear.

Watch til’ the end as there are some pics of the unlucky amberjack above water.

Enjoy!

Have you ever heard of Ascension Island?

Most people don’t even know it exists…

It is a small island out in the South Atlantic Ocean (in the middle of nowhere in between South America and Africa).

Wondering what goes on at Ascension Island?

Well, it can all be summed up in this epic spearfishing video…

  • 300lb Tuna
  • 200lb Wahoo
  • 1,000lb Marlin

And definitely watch this video til the end. It just keeps getting better and better.

If it doesn’t have you urging to take a spearfishing trip with Cameron Kirkconnell, then nothing will.

Incredible job Cameron, Perrin James (the videographer), and the rest of the crew.

If you have ever been spearfishing before, you know that the “perfect shot” rarely exists in real life…

Spearfishing is the ultimate form of underwater hunting, and more often than not, you don’t come up with a nice fish.

But every once in a while lady luck shows her face, and magically presents nice Sériole (part of the Amberjack family) right in front of your face…

In fact, so close that it was almost self-defense!

I can only imagine the diver was a bit startled himself after holding his breath on the bottom for so long, only to start an ascent and have a small school of amberjack show up right next to his spear.

I thought he was about to get spooled, but the very end of the video shows his prize…

Enjoy!

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

What a wild video!

I kept waiting for a fish to arrive on the scene (as this guy could certainly hold his breath for quite some time), and then it finally happened…

A real nice Tuna makes the mistake of swimming right above this spearfisherman’s head…

But it doesn’t end there…

I won’t ruin it for you, but let’s just say this is what it must be like to have your spear attached to a train as you watch it fly by!

Holy line removal!

Enjoy.

What should you do when you come across a nice cobia hanging under a manta ray and you just can’t get it to hit your lure?

Pretty simple solution…

You have your buddy put on his mask and fins, grab his speargun, and then jump out of the slow moving boat to pluck off the cobia for you.

This video is also a little sliver of redemption for diver Joey Antonelli, the same guy that had tens of thousands of anglers watch him in pain as a triggerfish bit him in the groin area… (you can watch that video here)

Even though Joey wasn’t the diver that made the shot, it was his camera, and he did all of the editing.

The diver that plucked off the cobia was Nick Furrow.

Great job Joey and Nick!

Enjoy.

What’s better than this scenario while spearfishing…

  • Taking your big breath and heading down to the bottom of the ocean floor…
  • Looking under a rock ledge and seeing a nice coral trout (aka leopard coral grouper, aka leopard coral trout)…
  • Nailing the coral trout with your first shot…
  • Pulling up a nice fish for dinner…

Well, the only thing that could be better is pulling up THREE coral trout for dinner in one shot!

You’ve got to see the surprise that this diver from Youngbloods Spearfishing has after he can’t manage to pull the fish (and his spear) out of the rocks in one breath.

When he heads back down to retrieve his spear and his kill, he realizes why it was so tough to get the spear out… what a nice surprise.

Enjoy!
