Alex Fogg, “The Lionfish Killer”, is back!

And he even has Alan Pierce (the same guy that risked putting his arm down a Goliath Grouper’s mouth to take out 6-feet of steel leader – you can watch that video here) with him to help pluck of these invasive fish we all know as “Lionfish”.

In this video, Alex, Alan, Heidi, and Mike (The Reef Rangers) were participating at the Guy Harvey Lionfish Safari this past weekend.

And of course, The Lionfish Killer’s team won first place.

It’s kind of like having Chuck Norris on your team… you can’t lose.

Here are Alex’s notes from the Guy Harvey event:

We harvested 415 lionfish and took first place! All lionfish collected were sampled for science and filleted / served at the Guy Harvey Outpost. Couldn’t have done it without the support of Dive Rite. Thanks to Reef Monitoring for putting on a great event.

Great job Reef Rangers!

Russia can be a cruel place sometimes…

You can’t even tickle a monkfish without getting your hand slapped (or almost bitten off)…

In this video, a monkfish bites a diver in the hand to the point that the diver’s hand is stuck in its mouth like a vice.

So much so that they have to pry the monkfish mouth open with every object they could find on the dock.

All I can say is that this diver is extremely lucky he had thick dive gloves on… otherwise this one would have ended pretty nasty.

Pretty wild video!

Enjoy.

Have you ever seen a monkfish in real life?

If you ever do, you might want to keep your hands in your pockets (or wetsuit)…

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

Wait for it…

Pa-POW!

This is one of the craziest spearfishing videos I have seen yet (and I have seen a lot of them)!

While a monkfish was waiting behind a rock to sabotage an unsuspecting bait fish, he had the surprise of his life to find out he was biting down on a stainless steel spear shaft instead of a fish…

Not sure who was more surprised, the monkfish or the diver…

As you will see, the attack snapped one of the spear bands, but with one still left, the diver was able to score a nice monkfish meal with an easy shot to the head once the monkfish let go of his spear.

NUTS!!!

Enjoy this one and don’t forget to share this one when you are done watching it a couple of times (I had to watch it about 4 times to make sure what I was seeing was real!).

WOWZERS!

Talk about a day of spearfishing that this 8-year old kid will never forget!

And thank goodness he had a spear to prod the shark away, or this brave young kid could have had more proof of this “shark attack/charge” than just the GoPro video footage…

This kid is definitely Salt Strong!

Here are the notes from the video:

WHILE ENJOYING A DAY SEARCHING THE OUT REEFS. A 5 FT BLACK TIP SHARK GOES AFTER NATHAN GRANET (8) …NATE HELD HIS SPEAR OUT FOR PROTECTION, WHILE DAD WAS HANDED A SPEAR QUICKLY BY NATES BIG BROTHER HOLDEN (ON BOAT) AND FENDED OFF SHARK.

THE LOCAL BAHAMIANS BLAMED RENEGADE SHARK FEEDING OPERATIONS FROM THE US FOR CREATING HOSTILE SHARKS AGGRESSIVE TO HUMANS. THE ATTACK WAS UNPROVOKED.

WE HAD SPEARED NO FISH AND HAD JUST ARRIVED AT THE SHOAL WEST OF WALKERS CAY. NATHAN WAS BACK IN THE WATER THE FOLLOWING DAY ENJOYING THE BEAUTIFUL BAHAMIAN REEFS. ….BRAVE 8 YROLD BOY

Make sure to watch the part at the end where they show the shark attack in Slo-Mo1

THIS…

IS…

PAINFUL!

And his friends laughing hysterically at him make this hilariously painful spearfishing video even that much better!

When we saw our friend Joey Antonelli’s video title “Triggerfish Gone Nuttz”, we first thought to ourselves, “No way.”

But then we watched the video…

And after replaying it a couple of times last night I literally had tears coming down my face.

I won’t ruin it for you, but let’s just say this was a painful spearfishing experience. And you know it is serious when you have to pull a sharp dive knife out and direct it towards your family jewels.

By the way, these triggerfish have some of the meanest teeth in the ocean!

Wowzers!

Enjoy!

There are people in life that fish, spear, and hunt similar to an Engineer

Very slow, very steady, and very calculated… (I know, I went to Georgia Tech)

And then there are people that fish, spear, and hunt like a Boss

Ferocious, wild, and taking no prisoners… like this diver!

I still have no idea how he managed to get a couple of these lobster.

I won’t ruin it for you, but in this video, our friend Mike Shipe goes to town on some big spiny lobster. He grabs them with his hands and gets a few with a lobster lasso (aka snare), and then he pulls out the spear gun…

Take note that he only had time to pull back one band on his spear gun in between shots.

Great stone shot man!

Note: This was all filmed off of Jacksonville, FL

Over the past couple of weeks we have featured two amazing videos from our friends over at AFTCO (American Fishing Tackle Co.)

  1. “BOOM! Now This Is How You Make A Redfish Video” (watch it here)
  2. “If The Bonefish In Miami Could Make A Video About Themselves This Would Be It!” (watch it here)

Since both of these videos were widely (and wildly) loved and shared by our audience like you, I started looking into some of the other videos that AFTCO had on their site… and I came across this epic Mahi Harpoon footage.

Now if harpooning fish seems old school, that is because it is.

In fact, it goes back hundreds if not thousands of years, and some of the anglers in the French Polynesian area (Tahiti) still practice it today.

So while down near Tahiti, AFTCO Pro Oliver Emsallem attempted to catch bull dolphin (aka Mahi Mahi) the old fashioned way… with a harpoon.

Check out how he did below!

WARNING: You will want to watch this video more than once to see where the heck this Goliath Grouper came from!

If you have ever been freediving/spearfishing before, then you know just how painful this is to watch.

Because when you are freediving there is so much effort, time, and precious breath that goes into every kill shot… and there is nothing worse than having your hard work taken away from you…

And when Ben Carlson speared this nice Snapper while freediving, the last thing he saw coming was a hungry Goliath Grouper just waiting to capitalize on Ben’s hard work.

Ben was incredibly lucky to get his spear back, although if you look closely you can tell that the spear was bent a little bit.

And oh, by the way, if you thought that a freediver’s worst nightmare was a shark, you would be surprised to know that most freedivers would rather see a shark than lose a nice fish. Not to mention, Goliath Groupers can be more aggressive than almost all sharks when attacking your fish on a spear (there are of course a few exceptions like nasty bull sharks).

A great video from our friend BlacktipH shows some video proof that Goliath Grouper are more aggressive than sharks. You can watch it here.

If Alex Fogg, aka “The Lionfish Killer”, was a country singer, I can only imagine his hit song would be…

“Save A Reef, Kill A Lionfish”

(a play off of the hit song “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” for those of you that don’t like country music)

And yes, this picture below is what 1,399 dead lionfish look like! They put a water bottle in so you can get a frame of reference to just how many lionfish are in this “death tub”.

lionfish massacre jacksonville

I can only imagine that someone had some serious carpal tunnel after cleaning all of those lionfish… (in case you didn’t know, lionfish are incredibly good to eat).

And for those of you that only thought the lionfish invasion was mostly a big deal in the Gulf of Mexico, all of this footage was taken from Jacksonville, FL! So this lionfish issue is quickly moving up the east coast as well.

How can you help eliminate the destructive lionfish from our reefs and underwater ecosystems?

Become a Reef Ranger, or just get out there and pluck off a lionfish or two (or 1,000) when you see them.

To learn more about becoming a Reef Ranger (run by the FWC – Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission), click here.

In the meantime, enjoy our friend Alex Fogg and crew putting the hurting on some lionfish!
