It’s Florida Mullet Run Time!

And just wait until you see this amazing footage from our friend BlacktipH (see his YouTube channel here).

Every fall the Florida Mullet Run produces some of the best saltwater fishing action in the state.

Countless amounts of mullet make their pilgrimage south to warmer waters where sea grass and algae grow during the winter, which also means more predatory fish following this run than you can count.

It’s a pretty phenomenal site to see!

Heck, our friend Capt. Jeff Maggio even named one his YouTube Channels “The Mullet Run” after it.

And we can’t blame him after watching this incredible mullet footage below.

Warning: If you fish yet don’t live in Florida, this video could have you hanging up your leaf rake for a fishing pole this fall.

Watch Tarpon, sharks, and other predators explode and get airborne on huge schools on the migrating mullet.

Finally, if you have any mullet run footage that can hands down beat this, then please send it to fish@saltstrong.com or just post the video in the comment section.

So far we haven’t found any mullet run footage that beats Blacktiph, but we would love to see it if it exists.

Enjoy.

Talk about every spearfisherman’s worst nightmare…

An unprovoked bull shark cruising right at you with open jaws!

You have mere split seconds to react… what do you do?

It’s tough to say what any of us would have done in this situation, but here is how it played out for Danny Hendricks of Liquid Vision.

Some people were angry he pulled the trigger, while others say he had no choice as the aggressive bull shark was not backing down even after a spear gun was down his throat.

Looking through the somewhat controversial comments on this new YouTube video, here was one revealing another diver’s similar experience when he didn’t have a speargun:

“Yes, this exact scenario happened to me four years ago, the only difference is that I didn’t have a speargun so I was bitten in the calf area. I made it to the surface with only one fin. Today I can walk and dive almost normally again. Never underestimate sharks, they are unpredictable wild animals.”

What do you think?

Talk about the absolute worst thing ever happening while being in a shark cage…

This had me on the edge of seat wondering if there was a person in the cage or not.

At first, someone in the background yelled that there wasn’t, but it didn’t’ make sense with how concerned the deckhands were about the cage.

Seconds later, oa sudden a guy with a camera pops out!

Unbelievable he didn’t get hurt with that shark thrashing around.

According to the guy who filmed this, the guy in the cage did not have his camera on (either that, or he didn’t want everyone to hear him screaming like at the top of his lungs).

Here are the notes from the video (filmed off of Guadalupe Island)

On a recent great white shark cage diving trip we experienced a very rare event, a shark breaching the side of the cage. What might appear to be an aggressive great white shark trying to attack the cage, this is not the case. These awesome sharks are biting at large chunks of tuna tied to a rope. When a great white shark lunges and bites something, it is temporarily blinded. They also cannot swim backwards. So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backwards, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage. There was a single diver inside the cage. He ended up outside the bottom of the cage, looking down on two great white sharks. The

There was a single diver inside the cage. He ended up outside the bottom of the cage, looking down on two great white sharks. The diver is a very experienced dive instructor, remained calm, and when the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured. The boat crew did an outstanding job, lifting the top of the cage, analyzing the frenzied situation, and the shark was out after a few long seconds. Everyone on the boat returned to the cages the next day, realizing this was a very rare event. The boat owner, captain, and crew are to be commended for making what could’ve been a tragic event into a happy ending. I’m sure God and luck had a bit to do with it too!

I guess sometimes even tarpon get fed up with the bully of the sea…

In what could be the first ever footage of tarpon clearly chasing away a shark, this is pretty awesome to see.

Watch as these tarpon work together like a pack of wolves or dogs to scare off an intruder.

And keep your eye on the last tarpon that even goes right down to shark by himself for one last prod.

Wild stuff!

Lesson learned: Don’t mess with tarpon when they are daisy chaining…

Great job by our friend Sam Root of filming this footage with his drone.

Enjoy.

In Australia, the early bird gets the worm…

Or should I say the early shark gets the monster mackerel…

In this video, an Aussie goes down to spear a mackerel, comes up for a breath, finds out that the mackerel has wrapped the spear line around a rock, and then goes back down to find a half-eaten mackerel carcass…

The sharks quickly had their way with this mackerel, and the diver came up mostly empty handed (minus the half-eaten mackerel).

Pretty crazy how fast these sharks go to town on an injured fish and leave the scene like they were never there.

It appears that sharks and fishermen have something in common…

While hunting or fishing mode, don’t ride your wave runner right on top of us!

And as you can see in this video, the shark appears to be in a shallow water hunting mode and this jet ski was aiming right for him.

Can’t really blame him for coming up and taking a bite.

Here are the notes from the incident:

“My wife and I were on our Yamaha FX Cruiser jetski touring up the western side of Fraser Island, we noticed a shadow in the water and realised in was a rather large shark. We decided to get a little closer to take some video footage and we clearly got a little too close! No one was injured although the jetski did get some small scuff marks where the shark contacted the ski.”

Enjoy the video and be smart out there folks!

“Dude, we don’t wet a line on a Shabbos…”

This might be the coolest fly fishing video ever made!

Here are some of my favorite Big Lebowski quotes tied in with fishing. Can’t wait to see yours in the comments!

“F it Dude, Let’s Go Fishing”

“You don’t go out looking for fish dressed like that do you? On a weekday”

“This Shark aggression will not stand, man”

“This is what happens when you foul hook a shark, Larry”

“The center console really tied the boat together Dude”

“Brandt can’t watch this shark video… or he has to pay $500”

“Did I urinate on your boat?” “No, like I said, Woo urinated on the boat”

“What makes a fisherman, Mr. Lebowski?

“It’s Dude”

“Huh? Is it being prepared to catch the biggest fish… whatever the cost. Isn’t that what makes a man?

“Sure, that and a pair of testicles.”

The Dude Abides.

Brilliant work by Stripn Flywear! You guys are certainly Salt Strong in my eyes.

Enjoy.

I’ve got a question relating to cobia…

Why can’t cobia hang around nurse sharks instead of bull sharks? Haha.

I guess if they did, way too many freedivers would be prone to spearing them.

But no amount of sharks bothered our good friend Joey Antonelli and his crew (Scott Fricker & Nick Furrow) this summer.

Wait until you see how many cobia they were able to harvest this summer all while dealing with a crazy amount of sharks.

Here is a note from Joey on this video:

All the fish in this video were speared out of Sebastian inlet in 40ft – 100ft. I did experience my most memorable shark encounter. That was when Nick Furrow and I jumped in on a 12 foot Tiger Shark that was eating a Sea Turtle, so that we could shoot a Cobia that was following the Tiger Shark around. Nick shot the Cobia and we landed it from the boat.

What about you?

Would you jump in next to a bull shark or tiger shark and spear a cobia from it’s back?

Normally when you are fishing on a reef you have to watch your feet for sea urchins, stingrays, and other sharp objects…

But here on the Bugatti Reef (off Australia) you have to watch out for massive bull sharks just feet away from the edge.

Check out what this angler from Nomad Sportfishing Adventures encounters while fighting a nice GT (Giant Trevally)!

Amazing how close it was to his feet.

I bet he will be telling this story for decades.

Enjoy.
