The Amazing “Firework-Spitting” Cardinal Fish…

Have you ever seen anything like this before?

A fish that spits out firework-like luminescence like it was nothing!

How cool!

So just how does this “Salt Strong Cardinal Fish” spit out luminescence?

Well according to the BBC Nature Channel, these Cardinal Fish are essentially “throwing up” small Ostracods, very small ocean-living animals that give off immense bioluminescence when disturbed.

These Ostracods produce two chemicals called luciferin and luciferase. And when these two chemicals are mixed together, they emit some serious light for such a small creature.

And immediately upon being eaten by the Cardinal fish, the Ostracod essentially explodes with fireworks, causing the Cardinal Fish to immediately abort the last meal (probably just like any of us would do if we bit into something that started shooting off lights and luminescence).

This amazing process is called bioluminescence, and it is an adaptation that allows animals like the Ostracod to be seen in the complete darkness of the deep sea (where they can be found).
