When my main line is braided, how do I determine what my leader weight should be? Does it mater if I’m using a spinning or casting setup?
Great questions, Sean. There isn’t a one size fits all rule for leader length. I generally start my leaders at roughly 30 inches, and I replace it once it gets below ~18 inches for both spinning and baitcasting applications.
Here’s a link to a post that goes into it in more detail: https://www.saltstrong.com/articles/leader-line-length/
i have always used a surgens knot, whats your thoughts and have you ever tested it
That’s a pretty good knot. But the non-slip loop is the better option in my opinion due to having a smaller profile with a tag end that points back towards the lure. The strengths between the 2 are similar, so both are good options.
I am enjoying these straightforward bite-sized tutorials. Learning so much. A few questions…
About braided line, how long does it last? Do I need to cut some of it off when I get back home after a fishing trip? Do I need to replace the unused line that has sat on the reel for a year, two years, etc?
Thanks.
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Oscar!
Braid can last for many years based on usage as long as it doesn’t get rubbed up against an abrasive surface. You do not need to cut any off unless you see that it is frayed. As for longevity, I have some braid spooled on my reels that is 5+ years old, and I fully trust it to hold up to tarpon given that I haven’t used it much during that span. The only time I replace the line is if if (1) gets frayed or (2) gets too low that it negatively impacts my casting ability… which for me is once I get a 1/8th inch gap from the top rim of the spool to the outer edge of the line for my inshore setups.
Good morning Luke, my concern with the braided 10 Lb..This line is just too thin for me and I have problems tying the knot because I’m unable to see the line. I have switched to 15 Lb. braid and it has made a significant difference 20 Lb has always been my go to. I completely understand what you are saying and it makes perfect sense. Is there any other recommendations or suggestions you can make for me?
Looks like you made a good choice in going with the thinnest line that you’re comfortable with in using.
wwhat would be ideal length of leader ?
We typically recommending leaders in the 18 to 30 inch range.
If we get snagged then wouldn’t the weaker 10 lb main line break first before either a) the main-leader knot or b) the loop knot? it would be great if every time we get snagged only the loop knot breaks yet it seems like the main line would since it’s weaker and then we lose everything
Great question! Since braid breaks at a much higher point than its listed strength, a 10 lb braid will not be the weak point when using a 20 lb leader as long as you’re using a great braid to leader knot like the FG and a loop knot on the other end of your leader.
I rarely ever don’t get my leader back when I am forced to break off when snagged on the bottom.
Herd you mention the blood knot in one of your videos and after watching a few videos to learn it I like it , thanks
What leader length do you suggest for most inshore applications?
I typically use leaders that are in the 18 to 28 inch range.
well i have been watching all these q and a podcast and they are awesome mistakes we make i have learned so much all the fishing coaches you have so much information thanks to all of you you guys make it fun thank you
Great video Luke. Thanks for breaking it down.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson Marc!
