I’ve got a question relating to cobia…

Why can’t cobia hang around nurse sharks instead of bull sharks? Haha.

I guess if they did, way too many freedivers would be prone to spearing them.

But no amount of sharks bothered our good friend Joey Antonelli and his crew (Scott Fricker & Nick Furrow) this summer.

Wait until you see how many cobia they were able to harvest this summer all while dealing with a crazy amount of sharks.

Here is a note from Joey on this video:

All the fish in this video were speared out of Sebastian inlet in 40ft – 100ft. I did experience my most memorable shark encounter. That was when Nick Furrow and I jumped in on a 12 foot Tiger Shark that was eating a Sea Turtle, so that we could shoot a Cobia that was following the Tiger Shark around. Nick shot the Cobia and we landed it from the boat.

What about you?

Would you jump in next to a bull shark or tiger shark and spear a cobia from it’s back?

Let us know in the comments.

Enjoy!

We’ve been big fans of Robert and Sarah Arrington over at Deer Meat For Dinner for a long time.

The two of them make a great team, they are incredibly down to earth, and their videos have a way of sucking you into their world as they are always entertaining (while still giving some educational tips).

Their YouTube Channel is essentially a reality TV show in itself as you get to follow Robert and Sarah’s journey hunting, fishing, diving, moving into a new home, and even having their first child.

As you can imagine with their popularity, they certainly made “The Complete List: 85 Must Know Anglers In Florida” that we released last year (you can see the full list here)

Check out their amazing mini-season trip last month down in the Florida Keys below.

Not only did they limit out on lobster themselves, but they were able to help some young kids that were having trouble catching lobster get some bugs as well.

Keep up the great work Deer Meat For Dinner! (make sure to go subscribe to their YouTube channel here)

Enjoy.

It’s lobster season time!!!

If you have ever been lobstering for spiny lobster in Florida, you probably know that mini lobster season (which is the frontrunner to the full Florida lobster season) is one of the craziest times down in the Florida Keys.

People are everywhere, and if you don’t know how to find and catch lobster, then you will most likely get left behind and go home not hitting your limit.

And while we were down here in Islamorada (for the first week of lobster season), we had a few “newbies” ask us about how to properly net a lobster.

So we wanted to share some of our lobster footage from the where Luke nets 6 different lobster in 6 different ways.

Hope you enjoy, and hope you limit out with some tasty bugs!

Of course, one of the other ways to catch lobster is to grab them with your hands. Just be prepared to hang on and get a hand around the full lobster as soon as you can.

Enjoy.

I’d say that diver and spearfisherman Justin Smith had a pretty good day!

While diving off of the coast of North Carolina last month, Justin not only bagged handful of megalodon teeth, but he also bagged some grouper.

All while fending off a hungry shark.

And did he make it look incredibly easy to find Megalodon shark teeth or what? I’m guessing that I’ve passed over quite a few of them in my days of diving.

Pretty cool stuff man.

Wow!

This could be one of the best spearfishing videos of the year!

Talk about some amazing shots and wild footage.

The toughest part about this one was trying to figure out which part of the video to feature in the headline and thumbnail picture…

These guys (they call themselves Team Descent Spearfishing out of South Florida – Divers Greyson Dixon, Joe Cooper, and some friends are in this video) pluck off cobia, king mackerel, permit, and more in this epic video.

But after watching it twice, I decided “The Cobia Run” part was too good to not feature. These guys were going head to head with some pretty massive bull sharks with blood in the water.

I don’t know about you but the last place I want to be is in the water with bull sharks when there is blood next to me… same goes for hammerhead sharks which you will also see in this video.

At any rate, check out all of the great spearfishing action in this one. Great job Descent Spearfishing Team!

Enjoy.

For you non-anglers, don’t worry, this guy didn’t shoot two porpoises (aka the other dolphin, aka Dolfin, aka Flipper).

He was spearfishing for Mahi Mahi (aka Dorado, aka Dolphin), an amazing eating fish… and they are pretty fun to catch as well…

And this video has a TON of Mahi in it. In fact, it looks like Mahi heaven for a freediver.

After seeing (and shooting) quite a few Mahi, one of the freediver’s get a shot off that smokes two mahi at the same time. Pa-POW!

Make sure to watch for it at the 2:45 mark. And it was done with a Crist pole spear as well.

If you have ever been spearfishing before, you know that it isn’t always this easy…

Well done gents!

Enjoy!

He’s back…

Alex Fogg, aka “The Lionfish Killer”, is a back with another awesome video where he and a few of the Reef Rangers put a hurting on the pesky lionfish.

This time they are in Pensacola (approximately 15mi Southwest of Pensacola Pass). in 100ft of water.

Notice a few sharks come up hoping for a free lionfish meal.

Also, if you are interested in killing loads of lionfish and helping clean up the reefs here in Florida, make sure to check out the Reef Ranger program. They are looking for a few good men and women.

Talk about underwater highway Robbery!

These Goliath Grouper sit down by wrecks and just wait for a free meal…

Whether it be a hooked fish or speared fish, the Goliath Grouper doesn’t care.

Check out this wild footage of multiple Goliath Grouper attacking spearfishermen’s catches.

It was like the entire school of grouper were teaming up against this diver!

The grouper at the end actually pulled the driver around like it was nothing!

I bet he doesn’t go spearfishing on this wreck again.

Tough to compete with hungry Goliath Grouper that weigh more than you do…

As a final note, thank goodness this guy was underwater while he was yelling… otherwise, I am pretty sure we the language would have prevented it from getting on Salt Strong!

Depending on where you live in the world, these tasty underwater “buggers” may be called spiny lobster, crayfish, or bugs…

But regardless of what you call them, there is no arguing that the lobster/crayfish these guys are pulling out from the rocks are some big ones!

And if you have ever been free diving for lobster in the Florida Keys, you know that most divers use a tickle stick and a net to catch lobster.

So yanking them out with your hands is certainly more of a fine art.

You will notice the bottom of the lobster’s belly has some unique color. These are known as “Painted Crays” in Australia where the video is taken.

Great job OnPoint Spearfishing team!
