Holy Extreme Cobia Spearfishing!!!

After thousands of people saw our friend Joey Antonelli take a bite to the family jewels by a triggerfish (you can see that viral video here), he has had numerous redemption videos to make up for it.

But this has to be his best video yet.

Just wait until you see what happens at these two marks:

3:10 mark

4:08 mark

Not only do these guy spear cobia off the backs of bull sharks, but they have some pretty close encounters with the sharks as well.

Now I don’t know about you, but when I am freediving, the two things that I want to see the least of are as follows:

  1. Bull Sharks
  2. Lots of blood in the water

Yet, this video is full of both.

Amazing job to all of the divers in this video (Matt Budd, Taylor Heflin, Scott Fricker, and Joey Antonelli)

You guys are officially nuts!

And stay tuned until the very end as they even shoot a flounder from the boat!

Enjoy.

He’s back…

Yep, Alex Fogg (aka the “Lionfish Killer”) has a new video out.

And this time he featured not one, but two new marine cameos… a camouflaged stingray and an angry lobster.

Check out Alex and the Reef Ranger team go to town on this pyramid reef near Pensacola, Florida.

And if you don’t think we have a lionfish problem here in Florida, just look and see how these invasive species have taken over this entire pyramid.

But thanks to the good folks at the FWC and the Reef Rangers, our reefs stand a fighting chance.

Great job on the 400lb lionfish removal guys!

Enjoy.

The Lionfish Killer Is Back!!!

Note: If you didn’t hear the amazing interview with Alex Fogg (aka The Lionfish Killer) that just went live yesterday called “Meet The Man That Has Killed Over 10,000 Lionfish”, then download and listen to the podcast interview here.

This video below it a recent dive that Alex and his Reef Ranger friends did on a wreck called the Empire Mica off Cape San Blas, Florida.

They ended up filling up their zookeepers and came away with a few hundred pounds of lionfish!

Great job guys!

Thanks for all of the support below sea level to clean up these reefs and wrecks!

Enjoy.

As if spearfishing monster Wahoo isn’t cool enough, try doing it with swarms of sharks around you!

And before you start watching the first 45 seconds wondering where the sharks are, just wait…

At one point, it looked like every shark in the area showed up to see if they could get a free meal.

spearfishing wahoo
Here is one of the images from the video where the guy holding a bleeding wahoo is surrounded by sharks.

Now if you have ever caught a wahoo on a line and reel, you know what kind of fight you are in for.

Well just imagine going spearfishing for wahoo… And not just any wahoo, we are talking some big boys here in this video (according to the video author, these were in the 80-95 pound range).

Not only that, after the first kill shot, tons of sharks start swarming, making it even tougher on the spear fishermen.

Great video gents!

Color me impressed.

Are you wondering where this awesome wahoo action was all filmed?

It was in the Gulf of Mexico off of Texas. If you want to check out more on these divers and how to fish with them, check them out here.

Wait til’ you see this big ol’ Goliath Grouper attacking a spearfisherman that had just plucked off a nice snapper.

This beast of a fish certainly shows the diver who is the boss of the bottom of the ocean!

I can only imagine the person filming this was just as shocked as he/she watched this big goliath come out of the blue and steal a free meal from the diver.

I bet they are still talking about this wild dive!

The lesson here: Never turn your back on these greedy aggressive grouper… luckily the only thing hurt was the diver’s pride… and perhaps a soiled wetsuit…

Enjoy.

Fish On!

Coming home with a 19 lb red grouper that breaks a new world record on a freediving trip is pretty darn awesome…

Well, can you imagine bagging an 8 lb lobster (by hand) on the way up!

This is one of our all-time favorite videos from our friend Cameron Kirkconnell, and we wanted to play this one today because yesterday was Cameron’s birthday!

Happy birthday brother.

We hope you spent it out on the water with friends and family.

Enjoy and Fish On.

Just “go for one” and keep it safe they say…

The rare and sometimes impossible “7-10” split can get a bowling crowd cheering more than any other roll in bowling.

It’s one thing to hit multiple strikes in a row, but the “7-10” conversion split (where you convert a spare by hitting the two farthest pins in the back down with your second roll) is like hitting a hole in one for a golfer…

Or in the case of the spearfishing video below, drilling two nice fish in one shot.

What really makes this video even better is that you can see this diver is thinking about going after the school of fish in the distance, but then he waits it out a bit more, all of a sudden two other fish appear out of the blue…

I won’t ruin it for you, check out what happens below.

Enjoy.

no bananas on board

When I first saw this “Snook Spearfishing” video, I wasn’t sure if we were going to post it or not because of the reaction it might cause with Florida snook anglers like ourselves (even though it was a completely legal shot where this video occurred, and we have to assume that the diver was going to eat it for dinner).

But after doing a bit of research, I found a shocking amount of illegal snook spearfishing happens here in our own state of Florida every year!

From snook poaching, to newbies that just don’t know the rules, to tourists that don’t realize we have different rules on how to catch snook, there have been numerous snook spearfishing incidents (like the guy arrested for spearfishing snook in Port Orange, Fl this August – you can read about it here).

So I wanted to use this video to raise awareness that it is ILLEGAL to spear snook in and around the state of Florida, and you can and will be ARRESTED if you spear snook in Florida.

This video came from somewhere in Brazil (the Snook is also called “Robalo” in many parts of South America), and the snook down in South America have completely different rules than we have here in the Sunshine State.

So for the diver in the video, great shot and enjoy your snook dinner.

For all of the up to date rules on spearfishing game fish in Florida (including the list of fish that are illegal to spear), check out the FWC rules here.

Cameron Kirkconnell is no stranger to making it on Salt Strong with his epic spearfishing videos.

The guy has speared bigger fish than most anglers have caught on a rod and reel, and he has created some of the wildest and most amazing spearfishing experiences for his clients around the world.

In this video below, Cameron does some compilation pole spearing footage with his friend Logan Sterns. Here are the notes from Cameron:

Amazing watching Logan accomplish so much as a spear fisherman in the past 2 years with multiple World Records on our guided trips together. Logan started diving with me at age 13 taking my Junior Freediver Class and has since become one of the most accomplished young divers in Fort Lauderdale. These are few highlights from our year edited by Greyson Dixon. Email blueh2oboy@gmail.com if you are interested in your own Freediving and Spearfishing Adventure.

Great job guys!
