Beginner Training
Goal: Catch fish every trip
If you want to make sure to have some fish catching fun for you and whoever else you bring out on the water, then these are the steps you need to go through.They’ll lead you to spots that hold a wide variety of species and to use bait that appeal to fish of all sizes, so you’ll be sure to have some fish catching stories when you follow these steps.
Step 1 - Watch the Beginner level “90/10 Finding Fish” Lesson
Step 2 - Use Smart Fishing Spots to check tides and weather for the time period that you’ll be fishing
Step 3 - Use 1-ft contour layer in Smart Fishing Spots so you can easily identify ledges along local bridges, docks, etc.
Step 4 - Select 3 to 6 target spots that appear to have structure, water flow, and depth of at least 7 ft
Step 5 - Soak some chunks of shrimp (live or frozen) rigged on a small hook on the bottom near the structure, and be ready for a strike. Click here for rigging video for weedless live shrimp.
Intermediate Training
Goal: Catch Game Fish Without Needing Live/Natural Bait
Once you’re ready to start targeting game fish such as redfish, seatrout, flounder, and/or
snook, then you’ll want to follow these
steps which will show you how to find good spots where these species feed.
And you’ll make sure to position appropriately to make sure that you can get your lure/bait to
them before they feel your presence.
Step 1 - Watch most recent Weekend Game Plan for latest feeding trends
Step 2 - Open up SFS to check tides, winds, and temps and find the best time to fish
Step 3 - Use SFS map layers such as oysters, 1 ft contour lines, and smart spots to find with the most productive spots and hidden structure
Step 4 - Rank and organize your spots based on the conditions (current, wind, etc.)
Step 5 - Determine your approach and positioning plans for each spot that you selected
Step 6 - Select bait/lure of choice that you can get down to the bottom in each of the spots you plan to fish, and make sure to watch rigging/retrieving lessons for the lures if you aren’t yet 100% comfortable with them.
Advanced Training
Goal: Catch Trophy Game Fish Without Needing Live/Natural Bait
Now that you are consistently catching game fish, these steps will help you focus on
finding/catching the biggest fish in your
area.
You’ll learn more advanced tips on predicting where the bigger fish will be holding, and you’ll
be using more advanced rigging to
make sure that they can’t see/feel your line before they strike.
Step 1 - Watch most recent Weekend Game Plan for latest feeding trends
Step 2 - Open up SFS to check tides, winds, and temps and find the best time to fish
Step 3 - Check your catch log to see your prior trips under similar conditions (this log will be from all fish pics you post to the Community or pics that you upload into the Waypoints section in SFS)
Step 4 - Use SFS layers such as oysters & 1 ft contour lines to help identify which spots are likely to hold big fish based on Game Plan trends
Step 5 - Rank and organize your spots based on the conditions (current, wind, etc.)
Step 6 - Determine your approach and positioning plans for each spot that you selected
Step 7 - Select a lure for covering each depth zone that you plan to fish
