If you have ever been spearfishing before, you know that the “perfect shot” rarely exists in real life…

Spearfishing is the ultimate form of underwater hunting, and more often than not, you don’t come up with a nice fish.

But every once in a while lady luck shows her face, and magically presents nice Sériole (part of the Amberjack family) right in front of your face…

In fact, so close that it was almost self-defense!

I can only imagine the diver was a bit startled himself after holding his breath on the bottom for so long, only to start an ascent and have a small school of amberjack show up right next to his spear.

I thought he was about to get spooled, but the very end of the video shows his prize…

Enjoy!

This spearfishing video is amazing!

Crazy underwater currents, a huge AJ (98 pounds), line screaming out of his spear reel, a wild chase, and a bent spear shaft! Wowzers!

Quick story:

One of the most shared videos on our site this year was called, “This Is What Happens When A 150lb Amberjack Comes Head On With A Diver!” (you can watch it here if you never saw it).

In that wild video, a huge AJ (amberjack) comes directly at a spearfisherman, who was fortunate enough to “stone” the fish in a quick “kill shot”.

However, in this video below the freediving spearfisherman is not quite as lucky…

In fact, he spends over 20 minutes chasing down this monster Amberjack before finally getting to lift up his prize catch.

Here is what each piece of Italian text means in English (I took the time to translate it all to the best of my ability)

  • si blocca il mulinello = “Fish locks the reel”
  • comincia lo sci nautica = “It begins to pull me like a water skiier
  • non sono sicuro di averla passata = “I am not sure where she has gone”
  • assecondo le sue sfuriate = “A second burst”
  • dopo 20 minuti che e presa bene ed inizio a forzarla anche perche mi sta portando a largo = “After 20 minutes the fish had pulled me all over the place”
  • comincio a recuperare = “I finally begin to recover”
  • eccola = “Here it is!”

What an awesome catch after a 20 minute+ fight!

And the spearfisherman says the Amberjack weighed in at 44.5 kg = 98.1 pounds!

The notorious “Honey Badger” and the “Lionfish Killer” have a few things in common…

  1. They don’t care!
  2. They are crazy
  3. They are both bada$$

By the way, if you never saw the “Honey Badger” video, check out one of the most viral videos to ever hit YouTube below.

Now back to our friend the Alex Fogg, the one and only “Lionfish Killer”.

If you haven’t seen Alex on our site before, here are two of his most shared videos:

  • “The Ultimate Lionfish Killer Video” (watch it here)
  • “The Lionfish Killer Fights A Goliath Grouper Over An AJ!” (watch it here)

And in this Double Feature Presentation below (you can see the video from both Alex’s and Mark’s perspectives), Alex Fogg and Mark Miller find a shrimp boat off of Mississippi that has dozens of 5-7 foot Blacktip and Spinner Sharks feeding off of the shrimp boat’s “bycatch”.

It is nothing short of a crazy shark feeding frenzy!

Of course, most people that came across something like this would simply stick their GoPro in the water ( most likely attached to a long GoPro pole so they don’t have to put their hand in the water) and get some footage.

But The Lionfish Killer, He Don’t Care!

He and Mark jump in, get some wild shark feeding frenzy footage, and The Lionfish Killer even has to push a shark away near the 3:24 mark in this first video!

Make sure to watch til the end as The Lionfish Killer even pulls up a Massive Amberjack toward the end (you can see him spear the Amberjack in the second video below)

This guy really is bada$$!

Note: No Sharks were harmed in any way in this video

And don’t forget to see Alex’s view from his GoPro below.

Towards the end of the second video below, you get to see Alex plucking off Lionfish and shooting his monster Amberjack.

Awesome job gents!

It’s a FACT.

Big Grouper can be incredibly aggressive fish.

Just ask Josh Jorgensen of BlacktipH after he filmed the video, “Proof that Goliath Groupers Attack More Aggressively Than Sharks!” (watch it here)

But never have I seen a grouper try to take down a live fish that is almost as long as the grouper itself!

Check out what an underwater ROV (Remotely Operated) camera picked up at the bottom of an oil rig in Texas in the video below.

I won’t ruin it for you, but let’s just say that the Grouper might have bit off a bit more than he could chew with this big Amberjack! It looks like he is trying to “Choke” it down…

A big thanks to Keith Ludwig for pointing out that this is a Warsaw Grouper.

The Suspense is Killing me!

I repeat, the Suspense is Killing me!

First you see just a few small bait fish swimming into view in this video.

Then nothing.

Then a big Amberjack.

Then an even bigger Amberjack that is coming straight for the diver holding a speargun!

It appears to be just inches from the tip of the speargun!!!

Talk about a dream come true for any spearfishing enthusiast.

Can you imagine! Wowzers.

I honestly would not have believed the story had it not been caught on film.

If you stick around until the very end of the video, you do get to see some pics of this monster AJ above water.

Well our good friend Alex Fogg is at it again… this time wrestling with a Goliath Grouper instead of plucking off Lionfish.

If you aren’t familiar with Alex, he is the diver that has had more Lionfish videos go Viral than anyone else on the planet. And if you haven’t seen his incredible videos, here are some quick links for each one (but make sure to watch the epic Goliath Grouper battle below first).

  • Another Great White on Film. This Time in the Gulfclick here to watch
  • The Ultimate Lionfish Massacreclick here to watch
  • Triggerfish and Snapper Eat Lionfish on a Pyramid!click here to watch

So back to the video below…

Here is plot: Alex Fogg is down on an Exxon template wreck in the Gulf of Mexico doing some spearfishing. After he plucks a nice hogfish for dinner, a Goliath Grouper decides he wants it for dinner. Most divers would probably just let the Goliath Grouper have its way, and go on to find another hogfish…

But not Alex Fogg the Lionfish Killer!

He fights this Goliath Grouper through the wreck… well I won’t ruin it for you. Check it out below.

And stick around til the end, as the video doesn’t end at the Goliath Grouper scene… Alex keeps going.

P.S. – If you think your fishing friends and diving friends would like this video, please share it with them – I’d really appreciate it.

It is rare that you see someone catching an amberjack from a dock…

It is even more rare to see someone catch an amberjack from a dock with a hand line…

And it is even more rare than that to see someone catch an amberjack from a dock with a hand line and do what this guy does…

I won’t ruin the ending of this video, as it certainly surprised the heck out of me.

Check it out and give us your thoughts.

What would you have done in the same scenario?

Hand-catching Amberjack Dude = Salt Strong

After an incredible interview with legendary spear-fisherman Cameron Kirkconnell last night, it was only prudent that we posted one of his videos today.

And the footage of him going through the layers of fish (Goliath Groupers, Spadefish, and Snappers) before he finds the amberjack were worth the watch alone.

And then he shows us how it is done by pole spearing a huge amberjack.

Simply Amazing!

Most of us would have been ecstatic to catch a fish like that on a line, while Cameron the man is down launching pole spears at them.

Stay tuned for some more recent Cameron spearfishing videos as well.

This one was from the archives, but too cool to pass up.
