Have you ever seen anything like this before?

A fish that spits out firework-like luminescence like it was nothing!

How cool!

So just how does this “Salt Strong Cardinal Fish” spit out luminescence?

Well according to the BBC Nature Channel, these Cardinal Fish are essentially “throwing up” small Ostracods, very small ocean-living animals that give off immense bioluminescence when disturbed.

These Ostracods produce two chemicals called luciferin and luciferase. And when these two chemicals are mixed together, they emit some serious light for such a small creature.

And immediately upon being eaten by the Cardinal fish, the Ostracod essentially explodes with fireworks, causing the Cardinal Fish to immediately abort the last meal (probably just like any of us would do if we bit into something that started shooting off lights and luminescence).

This amazing process is called bioluminescence, and it is an adaptation that allows animals like the Ostracod to be seen in the complete darkness of the deep sea (where they can be found).

Cardinal Fish = Salt Strong

Just imagine going out deep sea fishing with your dad, hoping to catch a few nice red snapper, and all of a sudden you hook into something big…

This “something big mystery fish” seems to be pulling out line faster than any red snapper you have ever caught, it doesn’t feel like a grouper, and all you know is that it is something big.

After a long fight, you see the leader coming up out of the water…

You see the outline of the fish…

It appears to be around 4 feet long kind of looks like a shark…

And then as you pull this shark-like creature out of the water to get a closer look you see this crazy looking creature below…

(note: the use of red snapper was only for the purpose of the story. we realize that these guys weren’t fishing for snapper in 2,000 ft in Australia)

The very rare Goblin Shark

So Just What Is a Goblin Shark?

Goblin sharks usually reside around 3,000 – 4,000 feet below the surface (near the floor of the ocean), making it very tough for researches, scientists, or even fishermen to ever study them or come in contact with them.

The small number that have ever been caught are usually caught in deep nets, or randomly by fishermen that are fishing in very deep water going after deep diving fish such as swordfish.

These Goblin sharks are also considered one of the closest things to the prehistoric dinosaur as they haven’t evolved or changed in almost 125 million years!

Goblin sharks are also known as “Vampire Sharks” as they prefer to hang out in the deep, dark, depths of the ocean and avoid sunlight at all costs (hence their odd looking pink hue).

A cool fact is that this pinkish-red color actually helps them in terms of camouflage, as red actually appears black down in the depths of the ocean.

These Goblin sharks can grow upwards of 12 feet long, but this one was only 4 feet, and scientists in Australia estimate this shark to be 3-4 years old.

This Goblin shark will remain at the Australian Museum in Sydney for further tests to see what scientists can learn about this odd Goblin.

The first 30 seconds of this video starts off a bit slow, but you must see this full video. Simply amazing underwater footage with ocean currents and a human being.

Do you remember seeing the movie “Finding Nemo” where the turtles are cruising along in a strong current having one heck of a time?

Imagine what it would be like to do this yourself…

Although most of us do not have the lung capacity to enjoy underwater currents like this for very long, we are fortunate that professional free diver Guillaume Néry has lungs like a fish…

And this underwater footage that filmmaker Julie Gautier takes for a documentary called “Ocean Currents” is unbelievably amazing!

Had you told me he was walking on the moon I would have believed you!

Make sure to stick around to the very end as the free diver Guillaume goes Keanu Reaves “Matrix” on you around the 2:00 mark.

What I do know is that Guillaume Néry = Salt Strong!

Holy Snook Attack!

I used to think snook were pretty doggone fast…

Anytime that I would be out on the boat with my brother Luke and we would spook a snook, I was always impressed with how quickly they can dart off.

But then I saw this video…

And it is clear the snook is not match for the lightning-fast dolphin.

Pretty cool footage of how dolphins feed on the same fish that we like to catch as well.

If only that dolphin knew how good a snook tasted on the grill…

This Dolphin = Salt Strong

Did you see that great Super Bowl commercial about “throwing like a girl” and “running like a girl”?

It was a hard hitting commercial (especially for a father like me with two daughters), and the producers really nailed it on the head.

But the one thing they should have followed it up with was this video of Deidra Bridger (first mate with Captain Bo Johnson) pulling in this Goliath Grouper by hand!

What a rock star of a girl!

I don’t know how long it took her to land this Goliath Grouper, but one thing I do know for sure…

If you have ever caught a big tuna, then you know how hard they can fight.

I remember a trip over to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where my arms were literally like jello after fighting tuna for an afternoon.

Of course the super fresh sushi that evening from one of the tuna we kept from the afternoon, quickly made up for the bruised and tired arms very quickly.

But back to the story at hand…

Can you imagine trying to bring in a 900 pound bluefin tuna?

And then throw some adverse weather and wind in the mix as well.

But in this video, Bass Fishing Pro Scott Martin pulls in a 900 pound bluefin in record time using a Makaira 130II reel made by Okuma High Performance Fishing Company.

Great job getting this tuna in so fast, and great job on the release.

If you were diving down on a reef and came across a Goliath Grouper  for the very first time, your first thought would most likely be that it looked big, slow, and lazy…

But then you see a video like this where you can see just how much stealth they have when they are ready to eat…

Not to mention, it wasn’t like it just took a bite out of some small ladyfish, this was a 4ft shark we are talking about!

If you can ignore the shaky camera in the first 20 seconds, this video turns out pretty cool.

Goliath Grouper = Salt Strong

Here at Salt Strong, we don’t condone stealing of any kind…unless it is a seal stealing a surfboard that is.

I can imagine that the first time the seal popped out of the water onto the surfboard that this surfer nearly had a panic attack.

If you have ever been surfing before, the last thing you want is something living popping out of the water next to you while you are out in the ocean…

But it turns out that it was a more than friendly seal that just wanted to catch some waves and surf.

At around the 1:35 mark, the seal actually does some body surfing as well.

This seal is certainly Salt Strong!
