Who needs a heavy duty rod and reel for land based shark fishing when you can just use a Cuban YoYo!

If you have never seen anyone use a Cuban YoYo before, it is pretty basic.

But it’s not as easy to use for a first timer as you may think… especially fighting big game fish.

Let’s just say you might need to warm up your forearms and wrists before fighting blacktip sharks on a Cuban YoYo!

If you never saw our friend “Team Googan” fight a sailfish out of his kayak with a YoYo, then click here to watch that awesome video!

I love this thing!

It’s basically a Fishing Bait Rocket Launcher!

It’s officially called the “Sand Blaster Bait Caster”, and the guy in the video using this amazing fishing gadget is Tom Clark. The company that makes and sells these things is called “Bunker Up Fishin'” (check them out here on this site).

Certainly a game-changer for land-based beach anglers who enjoy things like surf fishing, sea wall fishing, and pier fishing.

Who ever would have imagined there would be a cannon-like bait caster that could launch a heavy bait out 300 yards! That is 3 football fields!

All I know is you better have a HUGE spool of line on your spinning reel because if you hook into a big shark out 300 yards, don’t expect it to just come right in without taking out any line.

Note: These retail for $999.99 (that includes a 6-pack of bait molds, 6 rigs, a rig holder, and all shipping costs)

Whoever said the toughest part of Marlin fishing is getting them to bite…

I bet if you asked deckhand Joe Freeman, he would tell you toughest part about Marlin fishing is the release…

Watch as Joe literally gets washed overboard while leadering and trying to release this Striped Marlin on the back platform of a boat (while the clients were up on the main deck certainly laughing a bit).

Probably the last time ol’ Joe jumped on the back platform to release a fish…

Enjoy!

Happy Early Freshwater Friday!

This crazy event just happened, and it was too good to wait until Friday.

And you will see why this video certainly puts a new spin on the phrase, “Catfishing”.

Could you imagine being out on the river and seeing a small orange head slowly moving toward your boat?

Then all of a sudden you realize that it’s a Cat!

These bass fishermen from Alabama will certainly never forget these catfish…

I wonder if they submitted them as new Alabama state records for 4-Legged Catfish?

Either way, we’ll probably never know how they got out there, but a good thing these guys were there to make the save.

I’ll be the first to admit it, I am not a “Perfect Fisherman” by any stretch of the imagination… so please don’t think I am trying to come off “holier than thou” with this post.

Anyone that has been fishing for 25 years or longer has seen some wild changes in fishing technology, in fishing rules, in fishing techniques, and in certain fish populations… and I would like to think most sport fishermen (and fisherwomen) fish differently today than they did 25 years ago…

If you were anything like me growing up in Florida, we were taught at a young age on how to use a seine net to get bait. Others even used versions of non-commercial gill nets (where the net mesh was just large enough to trap the fish’s head, but the body couldn’t get through).

But times change, you learn, you adapt, and you fish smarter.

So when this video came across my desk this week of some islanders catching a TON of fish in a traditional seine net, I couldn’t help but to share it and to get your feedback.

I fully realize that this is how many of these 3rd world countries feed their families, and I applaud them for continuing to find ways to live off the land and the ocean. But when you look at how many fish were taken in that net, it makes you wonder how long they can keep it up before depleting certain areas.

If you watched the recent viral video “Meet The Toughest Fishing Family In The World” (watch it here), you might remember the family saying that the fish population in their area is the lowest ever.

Sorry to say, but lower fish populations are inevitable if you use huge nets that pull in every kind of species around for multiple generations in the same areas.

The Lesson: Only take what you really need from the ocean. Just because there is a limit on a certain fish, doesn’t mean you have to hit it every time you hit the water. If we all fished like that, there would be nothing left in a very short period of time. We can only hope these villagers made use of all the fish, but even so would be a double-edged sword, as keeping 100% of what you catch can decimate an area quickly.

Fish On!

This is one of the craziest spearfishing videos I have seen yet (and I have seen a lot of them)!

While a monkfish was waiting behind a rock to sabotage an unsuspecting bait fish, he had the surprise of his life to find out he was biting down on a stainless steel spear shaft instead of a fish…

Not sure who was more surprised, the monkfish or the diver…

As you will see, the attack snapped one of the spear bands, but with one still left, the diver was able to score a nice monkfish meal with an easy shot to the head once the monkfish let go of his spear.

NUTS!!!

Enjoy this one and don’t forget to share this one when you are done watching it a couple of times (I had to watch it about 4 times to make sure what I was seeing was real!).

I hate it for this guy!

There is nothing worse than being out on the water when a Florida lightning storm sneaks up on you out of nowhere.

And I know from personal experience how miserable it is trying to outrun a fast moving Florida storm in a boat, but I can’t imagine having to do it in a kayak.

Good news is he lived to tell the tale!

Here are the notes from this wild lightning footage that made ABC News:

Erik Walasek told ABC News today that he always has his GoPro set up on a pole in his kayak when he goes fishing in the mangroves in Aripeka, Florida, and on the afternoon of Aug. 15, he recorded much more than just a few red fish catches.

“Before we went out, it was clear skies and down here it literally changes from clear skies to clouds to storms,” he said of the day that he filmed the video while fishing with his friend.

“In the summer, the storms literally pop up wherever they want to,” said Walasek, a 30-year-old plastics manufacturer.

WOWZERS!

Talk about a day of spearfishing that this 8-year old kid will never forget!

And thank goodness he had a spear to prod the shark away, or this brave young kid could have had more proof of this “shark attack/charge” than just the GoPro video footage…

This kid is definitely Salt Strong!

Here are the notes from the video:

WHILE ENJOYING A DAY SEARCHING THE OUT REEFS. A 5 FT BLACK TIP SHARK GOES AFTER NATHAN GRANET (8) …NATE HELD HIS SPEAR OUT FOR PROTECTION, WHILE DAD WAS HANDED A SPEAR QUICKLY BY NATES BIG BROTHER HOLDEN (ON BOAT) AND FENDED OFF SHARK.

This amazing dolphin video was recently shot in Broken Head, New South Wales, Australia, by Benjamin Macht…

And the crazy part about it is that he came across this by somewhat by accident.

Benjamin (aka Benny) is a German photography and video enthusiast currently working in Australia, and he visited the Broken Head beach that day to capture migrating humpback whales.

But when he saw all of the birds diving for the hundreds of thousands of bait fish in the massive bait ball, he cranked up his drone and captured the footage of the dolphins hunting that you see below.

What this mother dolphin is doing is teaching her young to run into the bait pod, slap their tale as hard as they can to stun the bait fish, and then suck up as many as they can for lunch.

Pretty awesome!

Here is a note from Benny (from Express UK)

“When I got there I noticed seabirds in large numbers feeding on fish close to shore.

“A short time later I noticed that there was a pod of dolphins too so I launched my drone from the headland and started recording this feeding frenzy.

“I was there for over three hours and the dolphins repeated this scenario numerous times in that time.

“It was truly spectacular to see how these smart animals hunt their food. I’ve never witnessed this before and to me it was quite special.

“As I’m interested in wildlife photography this was a morning I’ll never forget. Nature is simply amazing.”
