Conclusion
Wade fishing isn’t the “poor man’s fishing” like many people think.
In fact, it can be some of the effective inshore fishing you’ve ever done.
As Wader Dave points out, his personal best trout, snook, and redfish were all caught while wading (and he owns a boat and kayak).
And for you boaters and kayakers, getting out and wading can help you approach feeding zones with much more stealth.
Just keep in mind that like all inshore fishing, it’s all about finding the best spots (which very well could be the closest causeway to your house).

dave I’m new to the wade fishing, and I really enjoy it, but looking for some tips on how to present the lures, and how far is far enough I’m from ky. not salt their so this is a new experience for me. any help would be appreciated, thanks I live in holiday

Thanks Dave! Awesome information!Wade fishing is definitely not poor man’s fishing. Wading, I learned how to throw a flyrod at reds and specs all along 98, from east end, state park to the cut at SGI, and those killer holes at Lanark. You can’t get to most of them with a boat but you can in a Kayak! It’s March now… my blood is boiling! Wading teaches you about throwing in wind, watching the water, ripples in sun glare. You can stalk and watch a tide change, oyster beds come and go….fish move in and out. You even become structure! Without a doubt caught more redfish on a gold weedless sprite than anything! Stick 2500 in the back of your shorts, 7/8 wt flyrod in hand and flog away! But its like Wader Dave said, water changes… Hurricanes are like taking a completed puzzle, putting it back in the box shaking it up and starting all over again. I learned a few years ago when they were restoring the beaches near PCB If you see dredging off the beach, camp out on the beach… they are “a coming”. Thanks again J and L. I’ve been with you guys a little while and its been a fun ride.

This was one of the best podcasts I have heard since joining Salt Strong! I am about the same age as Dave but as far as fishing ability about where he was 35 years ago. This podcast had a ton of good information and tips.

Rich, I haven’t published my Wader’s Guides for several years but the dissections on Salt Strong are basically the same thing. Is there a specific area or location you are looking for information on?

Rich – coincidentally, I just waded a sand bar and adjacent shoreline to the north and south of it located at the north end of Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center. Not sure if you are familiar with the area but caught a number of small snook working a 1/8 th oz DOA jig and 3” New Penny CAL Shad tail. Caught some nice trout on the north side of the sand bar as well. Looked like a likely place for reds but didn’t get any. Fished the last hour and a half of the incoming tide at mid day.

At 72 I have been mostly an archery hunter from Indiana. Salt Strong has helped me become a fair salt fisherman. I have a modest boat to get me there or tow the kayak, a kayak to get me farther back but I wade when I see fish at a distance or fish activity. The one thing I believe is very important for insiders is to listen very intently…..then re-listen to the lesson. There is always something that goes overlooked when listening to a lesson. Something is said and it causes the mind to reflect upon experiences or places you have fished and the next point is overlooked. All I can say is thanks to the Simonds brothers for giving us the opportunity to learn a whole new recreation and have a reasonable amount of success.
I had a friend from Indiana come down in late February, before the fronts came through. He paid a guide to take him out for snook fishing. They did catch some good snook on live bait. He laughed when I told him the number of fish and size I catch. He even called me “silly boy” (should have said silly old man) when I told him I have not kept one fish yet…..not because no catch was large enough to keep. It is the challenge of fishing something new that drives me, not the catch itself. I want to learn how to find and catch fish on my own just like I have learned how to hunt squirrels with bow or to have a collection over the years of great midwestern bucks. One has to answer the question, what am I out to accomplish?

Awesome podcast Dave, been in Navarre and Pensacola area now for almost a year. Like you to start with I have no boat and am currently trying to do all my fishing by wading. Found some good spots so far but haven,t quite figured out how to maximize the technique to catch more fish. Have learned alot from SaltStrong though since joining in the past couple of weeks. Look forward to seeing more tips from you in future, Thanks again!
What is that fanny pack you use?
Outdoor Mohave waste pack can be found at Walmart for about $10. It’s big enough to hold everything I need and I sling it over my head and one shoulder to keep it out of the water while I wade.

I really enjoyed this info as I am planning a trip to FL later this year. I am trying to nail down my gear list. Right now I’m trying to decide on how I want to carry my gear either a sling bag or waist pack. Not looking to bring a lot but water is a must.
