There are two different sized Power Prawns (Original & Junior) which are both found on the main Power Prawn page in our store. These tips apply to both sizes… you’ll just need to match the hooks and jig head sizes to the size of the Power Prawns which are all labeled as either “Original” or “Junior” to make it super easy.

How To Rig The Power Prawn
The following videos show how to rig the Power Prawn lures to maximize your fish catching. You’ll see the top ways to rig these great lures on jig heads for covering the deeper water as well as a unique weedless rig for covering shallower water with a lot of structure.

Here’s a table for selecting the right jig head based on depth zone coverage needed:
- 1/8th oz – ideal for fishing the shallows down to roughly 4 ft of water
- 1/4th oz – ideal for 3 ft depths down to roughly 7 ft of water
- 1/2 oz – ideal for 6 ft of water down to roughly 15 ft
Notes:
– These depth zones are just estimates… you may need to go heavier if you’re fishing an area with strong currents or if you’re fishing with thick lines.
– We’ll be bringing on larger jig heads soon for those who want to fish these shrimp lures in deeper water.

I highly recommend 7′ to 7’6″ Fast Action blanks with Medium Heavy power (Medium for some brands like TFO).

- [Baitcasting] I am newly starting to use baitcasting for saltwater fishing when using these lures for dock fishing because it helps me get better casting performance when using stronger line (30 lb braid). The rod I’m testing is the Omen Black from 13 Fishing (7 ft Moderate power… I wish I got a MH power because this one is only rated for 8-17 lb lines)
Line
I highly recommend using a braid mainline and a ~2ft mono/fluoro leader for maximizing your results when using the Power Prawns… I like 10 lb for the open flats, 30 lb for bigger fish close to structure (docks, rocks, etc.), and in between 10 and 30 if used to fish a heavy mix of structure and open.

Reel
In my opinion, the reel is not as important as the rod and the line. I recommend 3000 sized reels for inshore fishing with the Power Prawn lures because they hold plenty of line and have sufficient drag strength while they weigh much less than the larger reels.

When To Not Use The Power Prawn
This Power Prawn lure is at its best when fishing coastal areas with shrimp populations, so these lures get less effective when pushing up into inland creeks and rivers with lower salinity.
Also, this lure’s core appeal is that it has great action in the water (similar to a bucktail jig) clearly looking like a shrimp (big benefit over bucktail jig) which is why it has a knack for catching very big fish.
Given that its motion and visual definition are its top attributes, this lure is best suited for clear to moderately clear water. If you’re fishing in murky water zones, I’d recommend adding rattles and perhaps even using it under a popping cork so fish can feel it better. Otherwise, use a paddletail lure so that you’ll have more vibration in the water.
Rattle Tips
One of many great things about these Power Prawn lures is that they come with a cavity designed for rattles. This way, you can easily add in some noise if you are in need of helping fish more easily find your lure.
The use of rattles seems to help draw more strikes in most conditions. But I prefer to not use them when fishing in calm and clear water because the extra vibration can come across as unnatural and spook fish off.
So having the ability to quickly and easily add and take away the rattles is very helpful for us to maximize our time out on the water.
Here are the sized rattles that the cavity can hold:
- Width: 3 mm to 4mm
- Length: 18mm or less

Storing Tips
Just like all soft plastics, it’s important to not mix them with other brands when you’re storing them because some materials have a chemical reaction when exposed to different materials from other soft plastics.
I personally recommend storing them in their packages they come in to make sure that keep their form and which will ensure that they look great in the water.
Note: This material does not require that you keep it wet, so you can store it for long periods of time while rigged on your rod.
Conclusion
These Power Prawn lures will enable you to catch quality fish across all regions in areas where predator fish are feeding in the shallows even when other lures don’t seem to work.
The key is to practice the rigging and retrieve techniques shown in the videos above.

I’m looking for some jig head recommendations for the power prawn. I go to the keys and do a lot of bridge fishing and patch reef fishing once a year. Came across these power prawns and looking for jig head recommendations as the recommended ones in here are out of stock.

Are the weedless football jigs now the go to instead of the helix weighted hooks? I’m trying to use one type of weedless jig in grass flats around docks and at the jetties.
The new weedless football jigs don’t overlap the helix hooks because they cover different depth zones (Helix for under 2.5 ft of water, and Weedless Football for deeper waters).
So for shallow grass flats, the Helix hooks are the way to go. And for deeper docks/jetties, the Weedless Footballs are the best choice for having a good weedless presentation.

Yes, I have been using Helix hooks in place of the Owners and I have found myself preferring the Helix hooks even when using paddletails and jerk lures because they seem to have a better hookup ratio while still being plenty strong to handle big redfish and snook.
Luke, On the topic of Power Prawns, rigging and hooks. I have the Gamakatsu Weighted Superline Spr-Locks. The weight on those hooks is farther down the hook than the hooks you were rigging with. Is that okay or do I need to get the type of weighted hooks with the weight farther forward? Also, I noticed you were using a loop type knot. I assume that knot for the prawn is a must in your book.
Hey James, those Gamakatsu hooks should work well enough with the Power Prawn USA lures for the shallows… just know that they won’t be able to dive down as far with the weight being positioned farther away from the nose of the lure.
Yes, make sure to use a loop knot to give the lure the as much freedom of motion in the water to naturally dive down towards the bottom… I use the non-slip loop knot.

Luke, enjoyed the film. Quick question. Do you suggest using the Dr Juice in this type fishing. Will,it help increase the bite?The film didn’t show you applying Dr. Juice or maybe if was edited out. I love fishing docs here in SC but I usually fish popping corks or Carolina rigs with shrimp or mud minnows. I am anxious to learn to fish the docs with artificials. Thanks for the info.
Hey Gary, my apologies for missing your question when you asked it… I do suggest using the Saltwater Slam scent from Dr. Juice on these Power Prawn USA lures, but it’s of course not a requirement.
Note: I tried a Carolina rig with these lures, and it didn’t perform nearly as well as a jig head.

Great coarse like yea I decided to try these I will admit watching your videos they do have some great action and although we here in north east Florida jax area do not have sandy potholes I’m sure around oysters they would work great and around docks as well I know I’m always complimenting the chasebaits flickprawn unfortunatly it’s very limited in using on docks because of its limited depth range the flats it’s great but it doesn’t get deep enough to effectively fish most docks unless they are in depths of only say max 8 ft then its iffy at best because here our tides are much stronger then your gulf coast area of Florida so they tend to drift by the dock and not stay in the strike zone as long as they should in my opinion but the power prawn looks like it would be great thats probably where I will use it most is around deeper docks where bottom depth is crucial anyways hopefully they will work for me as good as they do you we will just have to see I just ordered 2 packs of each and the same in the jighead if they work for me as good as you I will definitely order more mine should arrive this Friday gonna give them a try this mon on presidents day thanks for the videos and all you do😉👍

@LukeSimonds – I noticed the power prawn jr’s have slit on side, do you recommend having the hook exit through that slit?
The slit on the bottom is there to help increase the hookup ratio when using weedless hooks (less material for hook to have to move through). I recommend rigging with the hook entering into the slit for overall best performance.
