Understanding Tides & Moon Phases For Speckled Trout Fishing

Ever had an epic trout fishing day and wondered, “Why was today so good?” The answer might be moon phases, tides, and solunar feeding periods.

In this episode, Scott Ray breaks down how tides and lunar cycles influence trout behavior—and how YOU can use this knowledge to plan better fishing trips.

Breaking Down Moon Phases & Tidal Movement

Tides are driven by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. But did you know different moon phases create different tidal strengths?

  • Full Moon & New Moon = Strongest Tides (Spring Tides)
  • Quarter Moons = Weakest Tides (Neap Tides)
  • Waxing/Waning Gibbous = Prime Time for Big Trout!

How Does This Affect Trout Fishing?

  • Full Moon: Trophy trout often feed at night, making daytime bites tougher.
  • New Moon: Strong tides & more daytime feeding activity.
  • Gibbous Moons: Many trophy trout are caught during this phase.

Want to know the #1 moon phase for landing a true gator trout? Scott Ray breaks it down in this video, revealing exactly when and why trophy trout feed the most.

Went to the Fulton, TX, Fishing Expo, 5/25, and sat in on the Scott Ray(they billed him as Ray Scott) seminar. The half-hour turned into an hour, and he was very open to answering our questions. He is super-knowledgeable about fishing the Texas Coast, and gave the ten of us a lot of info. Great ambassador for you. I’m not much of a joiner, but I watch some of your videos. Thanks.
