Now, I’ve heard some stories about some of the old-school Orvis instructors getting a little crazy with their tactics, but I haven’t seen it for myself.

I noticed that you released the line from your left hand at the end of the cast. I’ve had some instructors suggest that you create a circle with your thumb and forefinger giving you a quicker way to control the line and remove the slack with less pulling. Your thoughts?
I’m sorry Mike, I thought I had answered your question a long time ago. I do make a loop with my finger and thumb when I’m fishing. This is a great question and a great point. My primary reason for this is to have near constant contact with my line so when my fly lands on the water I can control it from the get go. I see far too many people have way too much slack by not finishing their final delivery low enough. As you finish your cast, while your fly is going towards the water your rod should, I would argue gently that it must, end up about a foot off of the water. When you finish in this position and you have the fly line in your fingers (thumb and first finger) you are in the proper position to begin stripping immediately if necessary.
