There’s a lot of materials out there in fishing reels but this material allows Daiwa to take a lightweight, rigid material and bring it down to affordable price points.
Gear System
The main gear used to be the size of a nickel and now it’s the size of a silver dollar.
This gear is not just a beauty ring, it’s tough and durable.
You still get the 6.2:1 gear ratio and the same inches per turn, but you can turn the handle much easier with the larger gear.

The shimano Vanford absolutely blows the Ballistic out of the water..
It is lighter, has better line pickup, and has cold forged gears that are much stronger than the cheap zink gear daiwa uses.
Outside a fancy beautiful reel, but inside, just crap (zink) what a waste…

How does this compare to the saltist MQ! I was going to make that jump after I bought the BG MQ! This looks like a great reel!

I have two of last year’s ballistics – worth getting a new one?
I think it’s personal preference, honestly. I currently own a Ballistic LT 6000 and I’m still planning on purchasing the New MQ Model in a 2500D-XH when they become available 🙂 I’m a bit of a collector though, I tend to suffer from SNTS (Shiny New Toy Syndrome).

Saw a similar post but please do an in depth comparison with the Saltist MQ vs Ballistic MQ. Why is the Saltist so much more? Just going by the short marketing blurb, I don’t see the difference??
Thanks Richard! To be candid, I believe a big part of that is because of the combined Zaion Air Rotor and the ARK (Aluminum Round Knob) handle that they incorporated into the Saltist MQ. Personally, if you’re a diehard Artificial Guy, I would nudge you towards the Ballistic MQ. But if you plan on fishing any sort of larger Live/Dead Bait around structure, I think the Saltist MQ offers a bit more rigidity in those types of scenarios. Basically what you are getting in the Saltist MQ over the current BG MQ is a Zaion Air Rotor, MagSeal Technology and the custom Aluminum Round Knob.

The Ballistic MQ does also have MagSeal Tech! They’ve always had MagSeal in previous renditions of the Ballistic, and they’ve kept it in the New MQ.

Anytime, Mark! Honestly I think the Saltist MQ appeals to a larger market audience across the industry than the Ballistic MQ (which only comes in 4 sizes, compared to the 9+ with the Saltist MQ). Both are awesome, in their own right.
