This Is How To Net Big Fish From A Boat Like A Pro

Have you ever tried to bring up a big fish from the water and then…crack, your net snaps or bends?
The weight of that big fish can damage your gear and render it unable to use.
Follow these tips on how to avoid these common mistakes when bringing fish up out of the water with a net!

When using a net to grab the fish, make sure you secure the fish in the net and then point the handle straight up towards the sky.
If you try to lift the fish with the net parallel to the water, you will break or weaken your net.
Make sure the net is perpendicular to the water so you can lift up and over whatever obstacles are in the way.
Be sure to put the net down quickly and remove the fish as soon as possible.
This is to prevent harming the fish and you can get the hook and line clear to avoid it tangling with the net.
When releasing the fish, give the fish a moment to rest or give them a head start so water runs through their gills quickly and they regain their strength.

Wyatt, I would like to see a video on how to properly pull a fish out of the water when you don’t have a net. I recently broke a graphite rod when I caught a fish that was bigger than the rod could reasonably handle. It was from a pier so lifting it out was my only option without a net.
If you happen to hook a fish from a pier and don’t have landing gear, you’ll need to walk it to shore. If you’re on a large pier, oftentimes the tackle/bait shop up front keeps and extra on hand for exceptional fish that need to be landed if you notify the anglers close by that you might need some help. I still do recommend keeping a drop net on hand (which we can do a video on) if you’re going to be doing pier fishing!
