STOP Fighting The Wind & Current (Do THIS Instead!)

Ever put yourself in the right spot, with the right lure, and still go home skunked?
Chances are, your positioning was working against you.
It doesn’t matter how much time you spend studying fish behavior or scouting new areas; if you’re positioned wrong, you’re fighting the wind, fighting the current, and fighting your chances of catching fish.
That’s why we pulled this lesson straight from our Fishing School to show you exactly how to set up in:
- Shallow grass flats
- Dock lines (a.k.a. big fish magnets!)
- Rivers, creeks, and marshes
…so you can work with the elements instead of against them.

Recommended Gear
Since advanced positioning can involve longer casts and working against current, here’s the gear I rely on:
- Slot Machine Rod: Lightweight but strong, perfect for precision casting
- Slam Shady 2.0 Paddletails: The ultimate confidence lure for covering water
- Hoss Helix Hooks: Weedless rigging keeps you snag-free around docks and grass
Key Takeaways From This Lesson
Here’s what I cover in the video:
- Position down-current from your target whenever possible
- Cast with the wind to get max distance and stay stealthy
- Retrieve with the current so your lure looks natural
- When wind + current are strong, find coves or cross-cast for control
- How to approach docks, grass flats, and creeks from the right angle
- The difference between positioning with lures vs. live bait
This is the type of stuff most anglers overlook, but it can be the difference between a slow day and a slam.

Good info.
Good info. Thanks Luke
Short & to the point, thanks Luke !!
Great information. I fish in mosquito lagoon and Indian River at Titusville. We struggle with the wind direction all the time and positioning great information. Thank you.
Our pleasure Jesse! We’re glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson.
Very informative and great reminders for factoring in wind and current. Thanks Luke!
We’re so glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson. Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Sara.
Thanks Luke! This was the info I needed. I’ll try to remember this the next time I’m out there. As an aside, this would be really helpful info to include when you guys do videos – pointing out what the wind and current is doing and how you’re dealing with it, not just what lures/bait your using. Thanks!
Thanks for posting the helpful suggestion. I’ll make sure to be more descriptive of what the tides and weather are doing and how I’m adjusting for it in videos going forward.
great info, thanks.
Thanks Jim!
