Guide to Fishing Line for Inshore (Braid vs Mono vs Fluoro)
- By: Luke Simonds

If you are just starting inshore fishing, using the wrong line is one of the fastest ways to lose the fish you have been waiting for all day. I have seen too many beginners hook into a redfish, snook, or trout only to watch the line snap or the hook pull because their setup was wrong. In this lesson from the Beginner Fishing Course, I show you the exact line combo I use to prevent that from happening so you can land more fish and avoid the heartbreak.

The truth about mono vs fluorocarbon leaders
The 2 Lines You Actually Need
Mainline: Braid
Braid casts farther, feels more sensitive, and gives you better control over fish. If you are brand new, mono on a pre-spooled combo works fine, but braid is worth learning right away.
Leader: Mono
Fluorocarbon is overhyped. My testing shows mono is tougher, cheaper, and just as effective. I use 20 lb mono, 16 to 30 inches long, tied with a Uni Knot.

Not sure about your reference to braid line being out for about 30 yrs. Maybe you’re referring to a particular type or brand. DuPont released dacron braid in 1951 which was the first, or one of the first, synthetic braided lines. We were using it in saltwater in the 50’s and freshwater in the 60s.
Thanks for sharing the helpful details… I should have clarified that as being roughly the time since braid has become very popular (at least that was when I was learning about it).
I think that’s true. Popularity declined but staged a comeback in the 90s.
