Inshore fishing during the dog days of summer can test even the most seasoned angler. The water feels like bathwater, the fish are sluggish, and chasing down a fast-moving lure is the last thing on their minds.
This is where cut bait can become your secret weapon. It’s a natural, irresistible offering that fish don’t have to work for — an easy meal they’ll inhale without hesitation.
But here’s the truth: simply tossing out a chunk of bait isn’t enough. If you’re not in the right spot, you could be soaking baits all day without so much as a nibble.
In this video, I’m going to show you the exact types of areas that consistently produce bites in the blazing summer heat — spots where fish are holding, feeding, and just waiting for an easy meal. If you’ve been struggling to get on the bite, these locations could turn your slow summer trips into some of your best days on the water.

Thanks for another insightful video, Pat!
Thanks for this video….will be headed out with some cut bait soon. We are from Texas but will be in the keys for about 3 weeks.
Great advice. I assume the cut bait is mullet. Any other cut bait that would work as well?Maybe Lady Fish or pin fish?
I was using mullet that day but any cut bait would work with these same principles.
Thanks for another awesome video and very informative. I am trying the new methods and looking forward to doing this. Thanks again and Tight Lines 🎣🎣🎣
Thanks for watching!
Another great video, Pat. I am also finding reds at constricted areas especially where grass clumps are present, and in open flats areas where oyster bars run along outgoing water flows.
Those grass clumps are a great little tip there. I’ve seen that same thing too. Appreciate you sharing!
Yea well while this method does great for all those that love using bait I don’t have the patience or desire to stink up my boat and self while using cut bait very disgusting and messy as well as can be exapensive because you not only have to have the knowledge of being able to fish it with mind bending boring patience waiting in the hot heat of the day sitting in one spot for an ungodly amount of time you also have to be able to be good with a cast net because bait shops at least the ones I have visited donot sell live mullet and if they sell dead ones chances are it is frozen well im absolutely horrible at both golf and using a cast net so no go there so no thanks if I become skunked while using lures I still love my time spent on the water because to me in my older age catching fish is only a very small part of the enjoyment I get from being on the water to me the peace I achieve is much more important now thats not saying I don’t want a fresh fish dinner its just not at the top of my priorities list anymore while being on the water living in this sick attention craving messed up society that is most prevalent today getting my peace is the core of my existent I get away from all the sick twisted sickos of the big city and forget they even exist when im on the water that’s why I don’t belong to a local saltstrong chap or care in the least bit about fishing with anyone else but my reliable true blue always loving never lieing never betraying dog that loves me no matter what with out the conditions that ALL humans expect from me if they say they want to be my friend which I have found in the past that NONE actually did im a loner and thats how I stay safe and not dissapointed and what others like or say or experience is there life I ONLY speak for myself and say what I have seen and experienced anyways enough said on that thanks but no thanks on the advice on cutbait don’t need the boredom or the hassel and thanks for all you do as well
Interesting perspectives. Solo fishing/just being on the water is a pleasure. What you may have missed was that ‘live bait’ also produces, and I primarily use live shrimp. I expensive and very productive. BTW, ‘sharing’ to educate others can be a special enjoyment for yourself and the recipient.
Trust me, I’m not a huge fan of fishing that way, I would much rather be casting lures but you can’t argue with the fact it works. I do agree with all the negatives you brought up.
Thanks Pat, very helpful I’ll be using this next time im out I like having some cut bait out while throwing artificial, especially when I have the kid or family on the boat.
It’s a great way to get on some fish with the kiddos!
Great video and information Pat. Always top techniques and educational topics.
