Why 844 Giant Pyramids Were Dropped in the Bay…

Sometimes conservation looks a little unusual… like dropping 844 giant concrete pyramids into the water.

These structures are called wave attenuation devices (WADs), and they’ve been installed along the Skyway Fishing Pier access road to fight erosion, protect the shoreline, and create new marine habitat.

Check out the full video below to see the impact for yourself.

The Salt Strong Alliance partnered with Florida DOT District 1 to tour the site, and what’s happening out there is incredible:

  • Hurricane Tested: After storms like Idalia, Milton, and Helene, the pyramids proved their worth by breaking wave energy and protecting nearby roads and shorelines.
  • Habitat Creation: Seagrasses are rebounding, oysters are attaching to the structures, and juvenile fish are finding new nurseries.
  • Community Value: These same areas are now being used for snorkeling tours, with opportunities for fishing, clamming, and future shoreline cleanups.

This is a perfect example of how smart, forward-thinking projects can protect our coastlines and give back to the environment at the same time. Learn more about Salt Strong Alliance and discover how you can get involved in the conservation projects they’re leading. And don’t miss their Skiff Giveaway, every entry helps fund these efforts!

Maybe our great governor will push to get these in all our bays and sounds. Also this spreads to other states would create even more habitat enhancement and job opportunities?

Great idea to say the least it’s just to bad that in the last 20 or so years that we as a society are finally realizing that people need to help the environment and not just stand back and either ignore it by saying don’t worry mother nature will take care of it well yes while sometimes that is true mother nature unfortunatly because she’s directed by God takes her sweet time and in these waiting times the conditions can and most of the time does get worse that’s why humans need to band together to help restore our environments and the planet after all no wild life whether it be birds fish or land dwelling animals are ever at fault with any of the problems the earth has its ALL mankind that screws it up so it’s up to us to fix it before it’s to late great job guys and gals great job because it’s never to late to simply care and or help🤔😉👍
