Low Tide Reds: Where They Hide (With a Quick Experiment)

When the tide drops out, redfish don’t just vanish; they set up in some very specific places. The trick is knowing exactly where to look.

In this video, Brent and Cameron launched on a low tide and quickly found fish holding where most anglers wouldn’t expect. They used the conditions to their advantage, and the results speak for themselves.

They even mixed in a quick “fresh vs frozen” bait test along the way. It wasn’t a full-on study, but it added a fun wrinkle and still put fish in the boat.

Software Used:

What Happened Out There

  • Smart Fishing Spots showed exactly where the tide was dropping and where potholes would be holding fish.
  • Brent and Cam dropped baits right on those edges — and redfish were waiting.
  • The quick test? Both fresh ladyfish and frozen pinfish produced solid slot reds… with a bonus trout thrown in.
  • While this wasn’t a long-term scientific study, it’s proof that experimenting on the fly can pay off.

Whether you’re soaking bait or throwing lures, the combination of reading the tide, finding the right structure, and trying different approaches is what makes all the difference. Brent and Cam showed how fast you can dial it in when you’ve got the right tools and keep an open mind.

All navigation charts are shown with depth lines at mean low water. Are Salt Strong’s different?

To my knowledge, this is the first time I’ve seen you or other SS staff indicate the 1’ contour marked depths is based on a MEDIAN average. Typically described as an average water level. Median average is a middle value among a set of numbers which can yield a very different number than a simple average. Regardless, if the set of numbers is from a 1 yr. data base (or 19 yrs. like a tide chart), the marked depth can be significantly different as seasonal or annual tide fluctuations can vary greatly. As you’ve said many times, do not rely on marked contour depths for navigating as they could yield damaging results to property or those on a boat.

Yea unfortunatly I don’t fish in areas like you guys do here in northeast fl our low tides are sometimes very low in which sometimes one can’t even get to certain areas unlike you guys fishing on the gulf coast that has very weak tides compared to ours here in northeast fl we have a range of about 4 to sometimes 8 ft also I don’t mess with stinking dead or live bait I have no confidence in it and its to messy and a hassel to deal with also we here on the east coast of northeast fl donot have potholes made in grass like you Gulfstream anglers do we have primarily muddy bottoms with oysters and shoreline grass and socks and points for structure and I also should add that anybody can scan the qr code and download the app but they can only use it IF they are a saltstong insider member otherwise it just looks like another app on your phone just saying not trying to be negative but only honest in what I know and have experienced🤔

Of course the app doesn’t work if you don’t subscribe. What do you expect, to get all their research for free? Don’t be cheap and pay if you want the benefits.

Donald, Steven is a SS member and SFS should be available to him. I don’t understand what he’s trying to say other than people who are not members don’t have access to the SFS app which is not breaking news. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ And they don’t get a 20% discount on most tackle and other paid member features either.

That is what im saying if you read the posts regurally done from saltstrong coaches I have seen alot of stupid questions that alot of new younger guys and gals members ask im just saying some people read this post and they think they can get it and not be a member and if you have been a member as long as I have been since 2017 then a lifer in 2018 you would know what im talking about because in this world where common sence is gone like the wind people will ask anything and I have seen it just speaking my mind thats all

I’m just saying you have to remember alot of the younger generations think everything is there’s for the taking with there self entitled non working for attitude and don’t know how long you have been member but as far as me I have been one since 2017 and a life member since 2018 that coat me 1167 dollars so I wouldn’t say im cheap I always buy the best in anything and alot of its exspensive but I take care of it all so it lasts just saying🤔

Buy the best and take care of it. It will last forever. Had clients catching bull reds recently and one commented on how smooth the Penn 850 SS reel was. I told him I got it on my birthday 52 years ago and it has caught just about everything but marlin. It still goes on every trip with me. Take care, Cap’n Jim
