Single Inline Hooks Vs. Treble Hooks For Saltwater Lures

With the rise in popularity of single inline hooks on saltwater lures, we’ve had a lot of people asking why anyone uses them in place of treble hooks.

So we put this quick video together that explains the core pros and cons of each option on the following factors:

  • Hookup Rate
  • Strike Rate
  • Catch Rate
  • Avg. Catch Size
  • Safety

This video includes a cool on-the-water example of how one of them can help make sure that you catch the biggest fish while missing the small ones.

Here’s the video:

Conclusion

As you can see, there are a variety of factors that you should consider when deciding between using single inline hooks or treble hooks on your lures.

Treble hooks have a higher hookup rate, but the single inline hooks will get more strikes while having a higher catch rate and also being safer for us and any fish that we are going to be releasing.

My initial impression of single inline hooks is that they seemed like there would be no way they could compete with trebles. But my impression changed quickly once I started trying them out and realized that they did a better job at helping me catch quality fish with less effort.

What I noticed about inline hooks is when you are fishing walls and you overshoot and land on the grass, it does not get stuck in the grass, comes right back over the edge

Single hooks are also easier to untangle from your landing net.

Thanks for the insight Luke. I don’t use many hard body baits, but the ones I do use are converted to inline singles. Years ago a jittery ladyfish buried a treble hook deep into my hand. That was enough for me. I would rather miss a few hookups than damage the fish or myself.

That’s great information, thank you. I agree that the treble are always finding an opportunity to grab my fingers.

Good info Luke. I’ve gone exclusively to single inline lures for hard body lures. My experience is just as you describe in the video. Thanks.

Something that was left out. Single inlines need a MH rod to get a good hookset. As far as safety with trebles, mash down your barbs. Inlines are great for floating grass but otherwise I am sticking with trebles with the barbs mashed down.

Switch to braid and keepyour rod pointed at thelure. Then you forget about the hookset. The fish will look himself!

Thank you! Yesterday. I went fishing with two friends and I was using a top water with single hooks. At the end of the day, my friends out fishing me by far, but I had the two biggest trouts, 20 and 19 inches. You explained exactly why!
