Speed Clip Strength Test: Which Style Has More Muscle?

Which style of speed clip is stronger?
I’ve been running a series of tests on speed clips to discover if one style outperforms the rest. In this video, I took two popular models to their limit to see if they can match their breaking strength claims and whether one is stronger than the other.
Any feedback or suggestion? I’d love to hear from! Drop a comment down below and join the conversation.

Tested Speed Clips
- Tactical Angler Micro Power Fishing Clip
- Norman Speed Clip (Standard Size)
Looking for a solid inshore setup? These two combos are perfect for inshore fishing!
➡️ Most Popular Combo: TFO Pro/Daiwa Fuego LT 2500D-XH
➡️ Premium Combo: Slot Machine Custom/Daiwa BG MQ 2500
Key Takeaways
- Both speed clip styles were able to meet their claims of 25-pound breaking strength
- However, the Norman speed clip (26.14 pounds) broke at a higher weight than the Tactical Angler (25.09 pounds)
- Remembers to use the smallest speed clip you can get away with to avoid affecting the presentation and action of your lure.
- The drag on inshore reels is typically lower (22 – 23 pounds max) than the breaking strength of these speed clips.
- Your line connection should be the weakest point in your setup for inshore fishing, so both of these clip styles have more than enough strength for this application.

Hi Tony. I wanted to take a second to thank you for the comparison test first, but especially second for the tips on using clips. I’ve been a Salt Strong member for coming up on 3 years now and mostly what I hear the coaches say is, “Learn to tie the knots!” That’s all and good, and definitely advice I’ve tried to take to heart. However, in my case I’m blind in my once dominant eye and don’t exactly see great with the eye I have left thanks to trauma-induced glaucoma. That being said, it’s a bugger of a time for me to always find the ability to tie the knots correctly. So, I’ve really been leaning towards using the clips and your advice on how to use them is greatly appreciated.
You’re welcome Jeremy!
Tony – thanks for testing those. I really find the comparisons and tests ya’ll do very useful. I’ve used both the Norman and Tactical Angler clips in the past with no issues. I would be curious to see you do a strength test and practicality comparison on the VMC Crankbait snaps.
You’re welcome Joe, thank you for the feedback! I’ll have to check those out
I have a beef with the Norman speed clip. I was using a new one while fresh water fishing. After changing lures several times I finally caught a small Whiting. I brought it into my yak when I noticed that the lure and fish were no longer connected to the Norman speed clip. Somehow in its flip flopping it freed itself from the speed clip. What would a larger fish do?
Ah yes twisting of the clip can be a whole different story as opposed to just straight direct force being pulled on it. The wire is much thinner on those so I could see how it could possibly bend open.
All I know is I have said this everytime you have done a report on the speedclip the bill norman has worked for me for many years without failure so why wouldn’t I use one but I only use it on my topwater or other hard plugs never on jigs or soft plastic lures only plugs they make changing out a snap and are extremely strong I have NEVER had one break on me and they are reletively cheap about 5 bucks for a pack of 50 which is a ton of clips but whatever works for some not so with others because everyone fishes differently thus requiring different tackle and techniques to get the job done thanks for the report and all you do
Thank you for the feedback Steven!
I caught myself closing my eyes and turning my head as you were pulling on the line.
Haha, it was intense!
