“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
~Mark Twain
After quiting our own jobs, walking away from it all, and starting Salt Strong from scratch, we’ve had a TON of people reach out to us over the past two years asking for advice on how to best start their own fishing company.
They want to know things such as:
- The mistakes we made along the way
- How much money it REALLY takes to start a successful fishing company
- How and when to best hire?
- How to scale it?
- How to quickly get new customers?
- How to make it profitable?
- What we would do differently if we had to do it all over again
So we decided to do ONE really over the top podcast episode revealing the answers to ALL of those questions (plus many more).
And this episode applies to you regardless if you want to be a charter captain, fishing guide, fishing apparel company, fishing media company, fishing YouTuber, or even just want to work for another start-up in the fishing space.
Enjoy and take notes.

Hello everyone,
Been having this thought of starting my own fishing company for a long time. I’m in my late twenties with a young family.
Stumbled upon this and I need a mentor to help me kick this off.
Much appreciation.
Thank you.
Thanks! I understand why the apparel had to go. I was nervous about it. Now it all makes sense. Thanks for the wisdom.
Thanks John!
Nice job guys! My wife and I owned our small printing business for over 17 years…….it paid the bills, but our weekends on Lake Erie gave us our peace, along with our relationship with our Jesus. I loved listening to your story. Niche is the key for sure. Keep up the good work, and I am proud to be an insider. Tight lines!
Thanks so much for the continued support Greg!
Great info! I listened to the whole thing while prepping for a day of offshore fishing tomorrow. I have my “why”, a few niche ideas/needs that I know I can fill, and I have my “inspiration”. I’m almost ready as I get things in order. Thank you for your detailed and honest information. I’ll be emailing you a few questions after a bit… seeking some advice and your opinions…if that’s ok. I listen to this video from Alan Watts every few months to get me on track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCUFs2qJ1bs
Thanks for adding that great video from Watts. And congrats on pressing forward with your upcoming business…. I just saw your new site (https://seapatron.com) and am very impressed. Looking forward to watching it grow. Don’t hesitate to reach out at any time for any questions.
Extremely candid….great work! I echo Simon Sinek’s view: be true to who you are and you’ll track the people you want/like. Getting your “Why” down provides a filter under which all considered work should go through.
Thanks Steven!
