The 3 Topwater Lures You Need and When to Use Them

The Breakdown

The Moonwalker: Your Go-To for Choppy Waters

First up is the original Moonwalker. This lure shines when the water is churned up, and fish need a little extra help locating their prey. The built-in rattles will literally help call the fish in!

– Single inline hooks for improved hookups
– Streamlined design for long-distance casting
– Easy “walk the dog” action
– Covers water quickly and efficiently

The Moonwalker’s noise-making ability helps fish zero in on their next meal, making it a top performer in less-than-ideal water conditions.

The  Moonwalker SBD (Silent But Deadly): Calm Water Champion.

Next, we have the SBD – Silent But Deadly. This lure is identical to the Moonwalker in shape and size, but with one crucial difference: no rattles. Here’s when it excels:

  • Perfect for calm, clear water conditions
  • Offers a more natural presentation when silence is key
  • Ideal for those quiet mornings when traditional noisy topwaters aren’t producing

When fish are wary and the water is glass-like, the SBD will be your secret weapon for enticing strikes.

The Skinny Lipper: Versatility Redefined

Last but certainly not least is the Skinny Lipper – a true game-changer in the world of inshore fishing. This innovative lure offers unparalleled versatility:

  • Floats at rest, but dives just below the surface when twitched
  • Effective when fish aren’t quite reacting to traditional topwater lures
  • Can be fished as a topwater, subsurface slashbait, or straight retrieve with a wobble
  • Drives fish crazy with its unique action
  • Catches fish in all three retrieve scenarios

The Skinny Lipper is the perfect solution when you need to slow things down and entice those less aggressive fish.

Cool video. Just an FYI the hooks are not holding up on the lures I purchased. Rusting. I rinse my rods and rigs after every use. Might consider different mfg for the hooks or hooks with coating?

I’m usually pretty good with topwater plugs my favorite being the spook jr in bone and silver and although I do own and sometimes fish with your topwater lures I have found that the skinny lipper is my least favorite I have fished it in ALL conditions using all 3 retrieves and have only had a couple follows on it and a couple small strikes but no takers or fish caught on them I bought the slam shady color when you first advertised it on saltstrong and also bought 2 other colors when you advertised the 3 that were new the only one I didnot buy was the purple one so now I have it in slam shady, gold and black body with orange belly, and silver and black tried them all with no luck which is funny because really it reminds me of the old original rapala black and silver floating minnow plug that has caught me and many others many largemouth bass as well as other freshwater species but never tried that plug for the salt but no for sure anything that will catch a bass will by far catch a red trout or flounder now that I think about it I might just try one and see if it might catch fish and possibly out perform the skinny lipper anyways like I have always said some things work for some but not always for everyone thanks for the info and all you do🤔

Here’s a slightly different take on these same lures… I don’t get much chance to fish saltwater (nor anywhere else) lately, but a couple days ago my wife & I made a quick trip out to Everglades Holiday park to see the sunset (which ended up mostly obscured by clouds) and I had a chance to fish for about an hour. After losing the worm I started out with, I decided to try the Moonwalker SBD. It actually got quite a bit of attention for the few minutes I was able to fish before being chased off by the skeeters. There were a bunch of strike/misses- much of it probably gar, as there were a lot of them present (I did catch one small one), but there were some good fish, too. I was able to land a decent peacock bass, proving this lure has more uses than advertised!
I do have all 3 versions, and look forward to a time when I will have more opportunities to use them all.

Good to know what to use when, Have you tried them in the Sebastian inlet? how are they from shore? not everyone has a boat or a friend (Locally) with one.

Big fish on a topwater is the ultimate catch. I fish with with it way beyond the “normal” topwater conditions and have had great success.

Two weeks ago, I fished with my all time favorite until I lost it in mangroves. Retied with the moon walker and picked up 3 redfish in 30 minutes. Had more strikes, but landed 3 in the boat. Are you selling replacement hooks for these lures?

I love the Moonwalker, great bait. Nothing like a top water bite.

I agree with you. Nothing beats watching a fish chase and destroy a top water plug.

Great video! Have all these lures but was super intimidated. Took a day to dial it down and started catching a ton of trout, ladyfish, and jacks! Looking forward to hooking into some large snook and redfish! Thanks Luke!
