Why THIS Flat Produced A Slam (Fishing With Wader Dave)

When you fish with someone like Wader Dave, you learn fast that he doesn’t just find good water, he understands it. This trip was the perfect example.

We set out with a plan to target all three species: redfish, trout, and snook. The flat we chose had everything working in our favor. By the end of the morning, we had a full inshore slam and a good lesson in what makes a flat actually productive.

In the video, Dave walks through how to pick a flat that consistently holds fish, including what to look for in structure, tides, and bait. You’ll see exactly why this spot was stacked and how our plan came together.

👉 Plan your next trip faster with Smart Fishing Spots.

Lures That Got It Done:

  • The Mulligan Paddletail (Terd Ferguson + Wedding Crasher): The MVP of the day, caught redfish, trout, and snook all on the same lure. Burned across the shallow flats for reaction strikes.
  • Moonwalker Topwater (Red & White + Slam Shady): Perfect for that low-light bite window.

Final Thoughts

If you want to see how structure, tide, and lure choice come together to create the perfect flat, this video is worth the watch.

Yea that’s the trouble with where I live in northeast fl very very few places to wade fishing because of how the bottom here is so mucky a couple times I remember when I was and inexperienced inshore saltwater angler I tried wade fishing and on one occasion almost completely sunk up to my neck in muck and marl not fun at all plus the fact that our area was effected twice by hurricanes with mathew in 2016 then in 2017 by erma the very few places that one could wade fish that had just a little seagrass the hurricanes ripped it all out and ever since then its been all bare sand with no structure for good fishing and unfortunatly because few people did wade fish it the fwc or ant other environmental organization is not planning on restoring it unlike the west coast of Florida where seagrass is dominant and the revenue from anglers fishing it constitutes replenishing it but of coarse its all about the money sad but true but it is what it is😒🤫

Steven – you are absolutely right about the lack of wadable water in NE Florida, compared with other areas of the state. That being said, don’t forget about the beaches and passes you have access to that provide some great opportunities.

Oh I know i have been fishing inshore saltwater going on 23 years now and total fishing since I was 5 for a total of 56 years started when I was 5 and am 61 soon to be 62 in Jan and have lived in Florida for 30 years now but I don’t fish the beach don’t like the crowds and only fish the st johns or the icw that’s attached to it used to fish guana by kayak but since 2014 when they changed how they drain it leaving most of the year to shallow I only use my skiff now but I catch my fair share because unlike most anglers in my area of jacksonville st augustine area of florida I fish at night in the summer months where it seems everyone else wants to fish in the ungodly heat but thats them because all I can say to that is great why? Simple more for me😃 thanks for the reply😉

I was using the ML 7’6” Slam Stick with an Otis 2500 Rewl and a 7’6” M St Croix Avid Inshore rod and Shimano 3000 Twins Power XD reel. Both spooked with 10lb Daiwa J Braid Grand line.

What were the type of backpacks you both are wearing? Having trouble finding a good one.

The bag i’m wearing over my shoulder holds all my lures. leader, pliers and fish grip. It is the Sonora 8.5 Liter made by Outdoor Products Waist Pack. I buy them at Walmart. com for $20. I made the vest/rod holder.
