How To Use Online Maps To Find Fishing Spots [Real-Life Example]

http://finding%20fishing%20spots%20on%20maps

If you like finding new inshore fishing spots, you’ll love this post and video.

After years of experimentation with every fishing map that I could get my hands on for finding good fishing spots, I have realized that the absolute best ones are completely free.

In particular, I’m referring to satellite imagery maps that can be found online for free from many websites such as:

  • Google
  • Bing
  • Mapquest

Best of all, this information can even be accessible while out on the water from your mobile phone which can be very handy if you can’t remember what is around the next point or island.

At the highest level, the first goal of reading satellite maps is to find areas with the type of structure that your target species is most likely to be holding at any particular season.

In general, here is the rule of thumb for fnding feeding zones:

As you maximize your structure, you’ll maximize your results.

The image below shows the real life area that I used in the tutorial video to show an example of pre-trip planning activities that identify good spots.

And then followed up with on-the-water footage of my first visit to this spot that resulted in catching activity in the exact spot I picked from the online map.

Green zone marks the spot with the most forms of structure… and it was exactly where the most fish were holding when I explored this area.

The act of reading maps is just as much of a science as it is art, so it’s essential to do the following:

  1. Learn the core tactics that are explained in the video below
  2. Practice, practice, and then practice some more

Note: If you stay to the end of the tutorial video below, I’ll show you a way that can shave many years of practice off for you if you’re like me and value your time.

Interesting video. I like the way you drew it out. My question is where was your boat positioned as you floated through the area? Looked like you were fishing the edge of the mangroves. Just wondering if that was the case or if you are out further where you get the edge of the mangroves, oyster beds, sea grass, and pot holes or do you drift out further and work your way in in several passes?
( also, am I overlooking a report on the Dunedin Causeway/Honeymoon/Caledesi area; if not will you be doing one in that area?
Thanks!
