Have you ever been completely surrounded by pods of baitfish? It may seem like a dream come true. But if you’re not getting hits, you may be overlooking sometime important.
On a recent trip, Coach Pat had acres of baitfish around you, but wasn’t finding any feeding fish.
Check out his video to see what adjustments you can make and turn it into a great day!
What To Do When You’re Completely Surrounded By Bait
Keys to Success
- Target structure with ambush points closest to where the bait is.
- When there’s no obvious structure around, look for grass lines or quick depth changes.
- Start shallow—there’s less room for the bait to escape and it’s easier for your target fish to avoid dolphins.
- In murky water, the Smart Fishing Spots app can show you what you can’t see from the water.

I purchased a Garmin 93 SV and all of the YouTube videos online are more geared towards freshwater fishing. I need help Setting it up Saltwater fishing. Do you guys have any tutorials that will show you how to set it up from factory reset?
great infor thanks
explains a lot now, thank you for the key points.
thanks Pat great info!
fantastic info….. youve really got a knack for understanding what is good for us to learn👍👍👍
interesting advice Pat. My question is I had bait all around me in charlotte harbor but was catching nothing casting into over, under it all. There was an artificial reef not too far from the bait, but in this case, after catching nothing, do you think I should have moved away from the bait to the artificial reef in hopes predators were waiting there? Thanks for your great posts. I’ve learned a lot from you!
Awesome stuff Pat. Thank for sharing.
Thanks Stan!!
I had this exact scenario a couple of weeks back. It also seemed to me that it was also important to “match the hatch”. I found the trout bite over grass patches using Slam Shady 2.0 and Fred paddle tails.
Absolutely! I was using the Lebronze Mulligan which matches the size and the color of what the fish were feeding on and that was finger mullet. Thanks for the tip!
Where I fish, this happens a lot. Tons of baitfish! Your video is a great help, and now I have a strategy to get those predators!
If you see feeding activity in the bait, by all means fish the bait. But if you’re not seeing any, find the ambush zones. Hope this tip helps!
Great information, thanks
Thanks for watching!
