The Marine Resources Division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources manages the South Carolina Marine Artificial Reef Program.
South Carolina artificial reefs are created using a variety of materials including specially designed concrete and steel structures, ships and tugboats, barges, army tanks and subway cars.
Most of the offshore reefs are only a couple of miles from shore, as the areas around the continental shelf are not conducive to creating new reef sites.

There are more than 40 offshore reef sites in the coastal waters of South Carolina.
The offshore reefs are made from steel and concrete bridges, New York City subway cars, concrete culvert pipes, steel dry dock work platforms and US Army tanks.
