How To Catch Bigger Fish On Topwater Lures With This Simple Tip

http://replace%20topwater%20lure%20with%20single%20hook

It’s topwater time!

One thing I’ve started doing recently is changing out the treble hooks on my topwater lures for single hooks.

I first started doing it because my dog, Otis, was always trying to get really close to the fish I was bringing aboard.

I didn’t want there to be so many exposed hooks that could accidentally stick him, and with the single hooks, there’s a much lesser chance of him getting hooked.

But the biggest thing I was worried about was my hookup ratio.

With a third of the hooks, I thought I would probably catch a third of the fish.

Was I right?

Check out the video below to see the surprising effect single hooks have had on my hookup ratio.

My hookup ratio with smaller fish seems to have gone down a little bit, but my hookup ratio with bigger fish seems to have stayed the same.

This has been perfect since there have been a few times where I’ve watched ladyfish blow up on my topwater several times, not get hooked up, then a big red comes by to steal their meal and I hook up with him.

And not only have I been able to catch more big fish, but it’s also good for the fish since they’re getting stuck with fewer hooks.

And finally, it’s been good for me since I have a less chance of hooking myself, my dog, and my clothes.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend everyone swap out their treble hooks for single hooks.

You can get the same single hooks I was using here, and if you want to learn how to replace treble hooks with single hooks, then watch this video here.

Hey guys, yeah I’m with y’all on changing to inline hooks. I’ve had great hook ups, had a couple small ones spit the hook but doesn’t happen often. Thanks for the tips 😎🎣

Do you replace the treble hooks with single hooks on lures that have 3 trebles?

I do on the Evergreen Shower Blower lure and it works well. For that particular lure, feathered in-line on the back (facing back) and J hooks on the middle and front (facing forward). That’s a good bigger top water that’s easy to walk and makes a lot of commotion.

I also like the Williamson Surface Pro 130 which is even bigger (which is good for big fish during mullet run) and comes with inlines out of the box. I threw it this weekend for big jacks in Sebastian and also hooked up with a medium size bull shark which was amazing and unexpected (I’m now considering running 4-6” of 65# nylon wire off my 40-50# mono leader on my summer/early fall topwater rig to have a shot of landing big fish with teeth as well).
