How To Quickly Chum Up Sheepshead (Without Wasting Your Bait)

Chumming for sheepshead is the best way to get them into a feeding frenzy almost instantly, and I’ve done this to catch lots of sheepshead.
All you have to do is scrape off some barnacles into the water, drop your bait down, and hold on!
However, there are several things you need to know before you go scraping off barnacles from any old piling.
Check out the video below to learn how to maximize the sheepshead you catch while chumming for them, and also AVOID getting a big fat fine.

The first thing you need to do before you go scraping off barnacles to chum up sheepshead is make sure that it’s legal.
Check the laws in your area before you go.
Also, don’t scrape barnacles off of private docks and don’t scrape off oysters (they’re protected and it’s illegal).
Now, if it’s legal in your area and you want to chum up sheepshead, then you’ll need something to scrape the barnacles off with.
Here are some options:
- Floor scraper
- Sand flea rake (I like this because you can scrap up, collect the barnacles in the rake, and throw them where you want to drop your bait)
- An old paddle
And here’s a little tip: since you’ll be holding these items above deep water, tie a little loop around the handle to wrap around your wrist so that if you drop it, it’s still secure to your hand.
Conclusion
As you saw in the video, chumming for sheepshead by scraping off barnacles can be really effective.
Just be sure that it’s legal in your area and you’re not scraping off oysters.

Tony, do you know if those bottom dragger jigs that you caught these fish on are commonly sold at stores such as Academy, BassPro, etc. , or are they king of specialty jigs available mostly as smaller tackle shops?

Great video dude! Quick question, do you find the bottom sweeper jigs are a better option to use than the mission fishin jigs for this kind of fishing?

I prefer the bottom sweeper jigs because it is a smaller hook, and they are also much more balanced to keep the hook point straight (so they sit up on the bottom to reduce snags)

I will base it on the bite. If I don’t get a bite for a while I will scrape some more. You just don’t want to do too much or you’ll just end up feeding them too much which will also shut down the bite.
