Lots of anglers up in the northeast use these HUGE baits to target big striped bass during the spring migration.

But as you can see, sometimes the opposite holds true!

I started to jig the bottom with a smaller bait and that’s when the bite really began to pick up.

When you hit the water for striped bass in the spring, sometimes you find fish all over that seem to have lockjaw.

During this trip that was the case early in the day, but by switching tactics and lures I was able to find the winning combination.

The specific bait I was using was our 5-inch Gold Digger Jerk Shad.

By switching to a smaller lure, I was able to trigger more strikes and reel in more fish than those anglers around me using much larger rigs and plugs.

I ended the day reeling in a solid fish of over 50 inches that snapped the leader just as I went to grab it next to the kayak.
