Many anglers fish on autopilot, focusing on execution rather than interpretation.
Better anglers are always adjusting.
This trip breaks down the real-time decisions I made that led to more fish.
No complexity. No overthinking.
Just small changes that produced results.
If you want to fish smarter, this is the mindset that makes the difference.
The Flea Flicker I used in this video is included FREE with our Ultimate Winter Bundle for a limited time.

Key Takeaways
- Adjustments are the difference-maker. If you’re not getting the results you want, change something: depth, speed, location, or presentation. Don’t wait for the bite to magically turn on.
- Fish talk through behavior, not words. Pay attention. More bites shallow? Stay shallow. More bites deep? Go deep. It sounds obvious, but the biggest fishing mistake is sticking to a plan that isn’t catching fish anymore.
- Reinvention is a strategy, not a failure. Don’t be afraid to try something totally different—new area, new retrieve, new lure type. Sometimes the smartest move is simply refusing to repeat what isn’t working.
Final Thoughts
One of the biggest mistakes I see from beginning to intermediate anglers is sticking to a plan for too long. If it’s not working, do something else

Curious as to why you wouldn’t try a tweaker with no wind? Seems like the message is typically straight tail for little to no wind and paddle tail when windier.
Good stuff Pat!
You da man, Pat! Can always count on you for spot on info! 😎📷🎣🧂💪🏻
Good video Pat. Lately we have had success with Mirrordines and Flea Flickers. Yes we use both! Along with the Prawn and sometimes a jerk shad. Paddles tails usually only if there is a bit of wind.
Good info Pat and some very interesting comments for sure.
Thanks Richard!
Thanks for showing me the small adjustments by looking at the environment that the fish are in.
Hope it Helps Leo!
Great info Pat! Last time I went out I was fishing from a barge channel to a rocky point! There were hundred of small ladyfish there. Every time you would jig up off the bottom you would get hit! Such a pain. So I went with dragging and very mild pull
ups of the bottom! You can feel the small strikes from the lady’s but then you would get a steady pull, nice 18-20 in trout, plus a 26” snook! Working slow works, not aggressive hits but the technique worked to fool them into striking! Merry Christmas!
Glad you liked it! This time of year slower is better!
Great tips. Thanks for sharing Pat! – Wes
Glad you liked it!
Great info. I like the idea of wiping the fish slim on the lure. Never thought of that, I’ll have to try that. I use Paul Brown original Corky’s when it gets cold.
Corkies are a winter time favorite for sure!
Hi Pat. I was out the other day and had the same conditions. I was using my favorite go to paddle tail (fred 2.0) and fishing a deep hole. I was seeing literally hundreds of trout along the shore line, I would assume spawning because of alot of side flash. I didn’t catch a single fish in that school. So I started to fish the hole next to them and I started to catch trout every other cast. I decided to experiment and fish slower so I went to a turd Ferguson prawn jr. And then it got really exciting. Not only did the size of the trout go up but now I was catching trout at will. The day was relatively slow until I found that spot and made that switch. The important thing about the location was it was a natural funnel with an out going slow tide with a 5′ hole in the middle and thats where the feeding fish were stacked up.
Sounds like a perfect spot!
