Best Lure for Skipping Mangroves and Docks [Experiment Results]

We talk a lot about the importance of knowing how to skip cast. But what’s the best lure for skipping under mangroves and docks?
I met up with Luke to run a little experiment and see which one of our soft plastic lures skips the best and the results were DECISIVE.
Even though there’s no question which lure skips the best, there’s more to the conversation. Once you get your bait in front of the fish, they still have to hit it, so style, size, and presentation still matter.

Key Takeaways
- All of the soft plastic lures we tested are capable of skipping, but some are more effective than others
- Hoss Helix hooks are preferable to jig heads to keep the weight from breaking the water surface and diving down
- Medium and large size soft plastic lures have significantly better skipping distance than small sizes
- Sticking with lures in the middle of the size range balances the need for greater skipping distance and matching the size of the prey fish are hitting most of the year
- Whether fish are keyed in on shrimp or baitfish, there’s an effective lure style to skip when you’re fishing docks and mangroves

Thank you for sharing this video.
You’re welcome James!
I’d like to see how the bomber skips as well, especially compared to the larger mulligan
It has a beefy body like the larger mulligan but the tail is a bit stiffer as well, so I would assume it would skip just as far.
Can’t wait to try larger mulligan and great test Tony and Luke
Thank you for the great feedback Ted!
Great test fellas and looking forward to getting the new beefy Mulligan!
Thanks Jamie!
Thanks Tony & Luke, awesome video, I’ll keep that in mind 🤙🏼

EXCELLENT on the water test !! Ready for the 5″ Mulligan to skip cast into the hidey-holes & also be able to cast a mile for stealth !!!
You can skip right past another boat with that 5″ mulligan haha

Great test and good insights, Thnx

Interesting video. Logically the larger would go farther after contact but the time to video was well spent.
