Is THIS the Biggest Scam in the Fishing Industry?

There is something most anglers buy without ever really questioning it.
It has been positioned for YEARS as a smarter upgrade, something that is stronger, harder to detect, and automatically worth paying more for.
Over time, those ideas became so common that very few people stopped to ask where they came from or whether they actually held up.
In this episode, Luke and I question how that belief became so common and share what years of testing and on-the-water experience eventually forced us to rethink it.
Watch what years of testing led them to question below.
👉 Check out the tests and see the results for yourself.
Featured Gear:
- Mono: Ande Monofilament Leader
- Fluorocarbon: Seaguar Fluorocarbon Leader
Key Takeaways:
- The most expensive option in this category may owe its popularity more to marketing than actual performance.
- A small but critical detail about how anglers compare gear explains why many people think they are getting better results.
- Years of real-world testing uncovered a weakness that usually only shows up when a big fish is on the line.
- One commonly praised feature can quietly work against you in shallow, inshore conditions.
- There is a narrow scenario where this choice might make sense, but it is far more limited than most anglers realize.
Final Thoughts:
This episode is not about calling anyone wrong or telling anglers what they should buy. It is about slowing down, questioning assumptions, and thinking more like a scientist when it comes to fishing gear. If you have ever wondered whether something is popular because it works or because it was sold well, this conversation is worth hearing.

Does line color matter or does it fade on momo…just wondering, hmmm…
I disagree with your assessment of Fluorocarbon. My catch rate went way up when I made the switch.
When you made the switch to fluoro, did you go up in line strength with the fluoro compared to the mono you used previously?
If not, then the diameter of the fluoro is thinner to the mono which most likely is the cause of the increase on strikes.
For example, a 15 lb mono often has the same diameter of a 20 lb fluoro (while the 15 lb mono is often equal in strength and much better at abrasion compared to the 20 lb fluoro).
Fluoro user here, many years. I’ve experienced a difference in brands (not all the same), so I’ve experimented, adjusted, over that time. Very secure with the Seaguar dark blue label – the one that’s the punching bag on this post and most of them here on SS, LOL – but I’m generally using 40# (sometimes, drop down to 30, even 25, just depends on situation). If whatever one’s using is working all the time, just stick to it. 🙂 Agreed…’very expensive, compared’.
Nice love these podcasts. Great stuff
I found out a long time ago that some fish key in on the knots of flro, Spanish Mackerel worst, went to mono and never went back. When dock fishing, I do not use any mono at all, I tie straight to braid even when the water is on the clear side, like winter time water we have here in NC
Great video guys. I’ve been using mono for 55 years and have never went the flouro. Mainly because of price. Good to know.
Here is how I got into using Fluorocarbon line. I chartered on Lake Erie, our lake was “invaded” by zebra mussels, the mussels by the filtering action to eat made the water crystal clear. Everyone thought they needed line like the ads said invisible. I started using fluoro. In the first month I saw many lost fish because the line abraded. I can’t have customers lose fish because of the line. I switched back to mono and never went back to Fluoro.
Thanks for sharing your findings Thomas
This makes me feel great. I have never left PLine mono for their fluoro or any other fluoro!
I love you guys and your instructional videos are great. But 29 minutes is way too long to watch. Delete. The 2 to 8 minute videos are great.
Thanks for sharing the candid feedback.
Thank you guys. This was good.
Thanks George!
