For the past few months, I’ve been finding schools of black drum on the flats everywhere I go. In this video, I’ll show you a recent trip I made while specifically targeting them.
Even though these fish are not a main target for some, they can be a challenge to catch, they’re fun to fight, and are great table fare, which makes them one of the most underrated inshore fish out there.
Check out the video below where I’ll show you what to look for, some tips on how to catch them, and the easiest bait to catch them with.

Key to Success
- Look for fish schooled up and feeding on shallow grass flats.
- Wakes, pushes, and tailing fish are all good indicators to keep an eye open for.
- Cast frozen shrimp into the schools of drum and let it sit on the bottom. The scent will draw the fish to your bait.
- When the fish are out of casting distance, wade out into the water to get closer to them. You may need to wait a few minutes to cast after entering the water because your presence can spook them.
