Nice Trout & Tripletail While Breaking In New Boat [Micro Draft Skiff]

There’s nothing like that very first trip on the water on new boat.

And the video below shows the very first time I launched my new skiff.

Trips like this bring an additional level of excitement from having to learn to fish from a new boat with new/different equipment.

The main goals of this trip were to:

  1. Make sure the first catch on the new boat was a good one (not a catfish)
  2. Start breaking in the new motor (Mercury 115 hp)
  3. Learn how to use a new trolling motor (Power Pole Move)
  4. Keep Otis from falling into the water

And the stretch goal was to bring home some fresh tripletail fillets for dinner.

Here’s a video showing some fun fish-catching action while breaking in the new boat:

I referenced the Community in this video multiple times because it is where I got the helpful tip about tripletail being in this area. This is the private platform where Insider Club members share helpful fishing reports and tips with one another.

If you’re not in there yet, it’s the best place to see what’s biting near you and what’s working before you hit the water. Now that we have over 60,000 members, this platform allows you to learn from many skilled anglers across the country who all love inshore saltwater fishing.

Boat Details

This Micro Draft Skiff is designed to get into very shallow water while pursuing redfish, seatrout, snook, and various other saltwater species.

It’s 22 ft long, and it floats in well under 1 ft of water as shown in this video. Also, it has a unique tunnel hull design, allowing it to run in less than 6 inches of water, which is much shallower than my 17 ft poling skiff can go.

Note: If interested in a shot at winning one of these boats while helping preserve our beloved waterways, make sure to join the Salt Strong Alliance raffle.

Final Thoughts

Breaking in a new boat doesn’t get much better than that. We tested the Micro Draft in skinny water, caught solid fish, and brought home a keeper triple tail to top it off. Excited to see what this skiff can do next time out.
