How to Catch BIG Fall Redfish

If BIG redfish are on your list, fall is the best time to target them. The bull redfish are migrating in and even the reds that stayed inshore all summer are beefing up on the abundance of bait.
These fish didn’t get to the size the did by hitting every lure that came in front of them, though. If you’re going to catch a trophy this fall, you need to change your tactics.
In this video, I’ll show you exactly how I adjust when these monster reds are around.

Key Takeaways
- Treat these redfish with care as you handle and release them—they’re the primary breeding stock.
- Cut bait tends to be the top bait. Use a large chunk of fresh mullet, ladyfish, or blue crab for the best odds.
- For artificial lures, use larger 4″ or 5″ paddletails or large shrimp imitations.
- Beef up your gear to handle these larger fish.
- Look for bull redfish on the edges of open flats, channel edges, and passes/inlets.

No beads on either side of the sinker? I always thought beads helped protect the knots. Never even thought of using lady fish for reds.
I’ve never used beads and haven’t had any issues. Ladyfish is a great bait for reds!
Looking forward to catching these big fish this October. Thanks for the tips Tony.
You’re welcome Daniel!

Great job as always, Tony. Thanks!
You’re welcome David!
Thanks for the tips, Tony! Would 20.lb test mono and 30 lb. leader work as effectively as braid?
You’re welcome Amos! If you’re using mono as your mainline a leader really isn’t necessary.
Great discussion I especially like your use of circle hooks so that you can release these big girls in good condition.
Thank you for the great feedback Mike!
Nice job, I can’t wait to hook the big one.
