Recommended Gear:
- Rod: 7’6″ Medium Action
- Reel: 4000 spinning reel
- Main Line: 10–30 lb braid
- Leader: 30-40 lb
- Hook: 5/0 circle hook
- Weight: ½ oz sinker (adjust as needed based on depth/current)
Best Baits (According to Capt. Deeks):
- Live or cut silver mullet (streamlined and hardy)
- Pinfish
- Threadfin herring
- Avoid: blue crab or square-cut chunks in strong current, they’ll spin and get ignored!
Final Tip:
When fishing these deeper zones, cast with the current, not against it. Use spot lock or anchor to hold your position, and let your bait do the work.

Just before the end and approx. 6:43 into the video, a fish chases some bait just below the surface behind Capt.Deeks.

Great Video / Tips….now I need time for the water !
Great tips for catching big reds near inlets on both tides.
Great instruction! Look forward to trying this. I wish we could get live mullet here in VA.
That’s exactly what I do 🤜🤛🙏
Awesome video and tutorial. I’ve been searching for a video just like this. I have this same scenario, inlet, rocks, current, etc. where we live. Due to boat traffic, too risky for a kayak but perfect for a boat equipped with a trolling motor and spot lock. Appreciate it.
That’s fun fishing.🤗🎣🙏💯
