WOW (“MOM” upside down)!!!
To say that we were blown away by the responses from this Mother’s Day Fishing Contest would be an understatement…
We had some submissions that made us tear up, some that made us laugh, and some that made us reflect back on our grandmother’s that are no longer with us. We are incredibly grateful for every single one of you that took the time out of your busy days to send in your submissions.
It really does mean a lot to Luke, Andrew, Chris, and myself (the full Salt Strong team).
Why Did We Do A Mother’s Day Fishing Contest?
Since this is our first year of starting the website Salt Strong, this is clearly our first Salt Strong Mother’s Day as well.
And as Luke and I looked back at how our lives have been shaped, influenced, and ultimately encouraged to follow our dreams, we know that none of this would have ever been possible without our amazing parents.
Our mother, in particular, was always quick to encourage us to fish, quick to snap a picture of us catching a fish, rooted us on no matter what, and was even there to help cook the fish…
So we decided to do a Mother’s Day Fishing contest where anyone can submit one of the following things in relation to their loving mom and fishing:
- A picture of their mom fishing
- A video of their mom fishing
- A note about their mother fishing and/or being on influence on them taking up fishing
We had absolutely no idea what kind of feedback we would get (if any), so needless to say we were blown away with what came in.
The Mother’s Day Fishing Contest Submissions

My mom has helped me get through some tuff times when my dad died. She has taught me how to fish and that is our way of bonding because me and my dad never got to share that experience. I want to get my mom something nice for Mother’s Day to show her how much I appreciate her being there for me, thanks Salt Strong and I hope you have a good Mother’s Day!

13. Manuel’s Mom
Being the daughter of a fisherman she grew up cleaning preparing almost any kind of fish I never understood why as a young kid she knew almost every name of bottom fish anyway still today she ask for a snapper grouper to cook them shes the best!!!!!!!
14. Bob’s Mom
My Name is Bob Orlando
I fish almost every day now that I am retired.. both surf fishing (in boca grande) and boat fishing along the mangroves… with small artificial’s and flys
I became addicted to fishing when I was very young. Mom encouraged dad to take me fishing which he did of course.
He didn’t care much for fishing… so it wasn’t long before he stopped taking me
it only took one time for me ( fishing in long island at that time) ..
I was hooked – I would get up at 4am and ride my bicycle almost 10 miles to a local lake (for large mouth bass) and then to a local canal (for flounders and blowfish)….
At that time we lived in a place called Levittown which was just being built and you could let your kids ride around without fear of them being kidnapped ( perhaps it was dangerous then also but the media coverage was not as good) …
Mom would get up early in the morning when I fished to make me breakfast and to see me off –
She didn’t care for me traveling that distance alone but she let me go anyway
Then without me knowing (initially) she would get into her car and follow me to the lake – staying a safe distance from me to ensure she was not discovered..
Thanks mom for a lifetime of fun
It doesn’t matter if this wins a shirt for mom – thanks for letting me write it – and for letting me think back to a time forgotten about my beautiful mom
15. Shawn’s Mom
Real moms aren’t scared…
16. Charles’s Mom
I was born the son of a commercial fisherman and my mom would often encourage me to follow the family business some day. The earliest memory I have fishing is with my mom. When my dad was fishing it was my mom who taught me how to bait a hook. It was my mom who taught me how to tie knots. It was my mom who taught me how to cast and it was my mom who taught me how to catch fish. She said she was preparing me to step onto the deck of my dad’s boat. Though time and distance has removed me from that life, without her I might not have been bitten by the fishing bug. I owe such much to her. Whether I’m chosen to win or not, because you stirred up those sweet memories I feel like I’ve already won. Thank you guys for that and thank you mom.
Rest in peace.
To every mom who invests in their children, Happy Mothers Day!
17. Steve’s Mom
Mom didn’t fish much but she sure like to cook em and pose with em. Miss her very much. Cape Cod in August, 1966 with Bluefish my Dad and I caught in Buzzards Bay.
18. Emery’s Mom
My mom would always cut bait for me no matter how hot or smelly it was. She would also de hook the fish I caught no matter how many spines or teeth were attached.
19. Steve’s Grandmother
My grandmother, Birdie-Mae Harrell, known to all her grandchildren as Mama Bird, lived in Rockport/Fulton, Texas and fished that area since the 1920’s. As children we would go out on Old Man Tandy’s pier ( of Tandy’s Radio Shack) about 3 in the afternoon and fish until sunset. Crabbing and Catching catfish, Crocker and trout, but few keepers. Mama Bird, however, would sit in her ’56 Chevy all afternoon in the shade of a big Oak Tree at the end of the pier with all the windows open catching the Gulf Breeze reading her books or writing letters to her children. Her grandchildren would spend all afternoon getting beat up by the sun and wind trying to catch fish to bring home for dinner with little luck. Finally, about 15 minutes before sunset MamaBird would open the door to her Chevy, grab her old rod and reel, while wearing her long sleeve ankle length
Finally, about 15 minutes before sunset MamaBird would open the door to her Chevy, grab her old rod and reel, while wearing her long sleeve ankle length poka-dot red dress and big sun hat with tie down scarf covering her ears, would walk down the pier with missing slats until she got to the end of the rickety pier. She baited her hook with a shrimp, looked over the side and cast the bait to a particular spot. About 20 seconds later she Would have big tug on her pole and would bring in a very nice 28 inch redfish. MamaBird then turned to her sunburned grandchildren and said it was time to go home and clean and cook her fish. I still use her old rod and reel. We still miss her on Mother’s
We still miss her on Mother’s Day even though she been gone for 30 years and no one baked or fried a redfish like Mama Bird.
19. Parker’s Mom
My mom has been diagnosed with cancer and the doctors say she isn’t going to live till next year, but she loves fishing and so do I. She hasn’t gone out fishing in a while because of all the treatments. I wanted to get her something special for Mother’s Day because she means so much to me. I really hope I win this contest because we don’t have much money to spend on gifts. Happy Mother’s Day

22. Carolina’s Mom
I have lived really far from my mother (USA-Brasil) for exactly 20 years this year. And it never got easy! My mom is not only the best example for me in life but also my best friend! I hope to one day be as good a mother to my kids as she has been to me!
23. Rich’s Mom
My mom watched over me while I fished before I turned 6. I was standing by the water and my younger brother was sitting on the blanket by mom,and he picked up her car keys and threw them into the water. She tells that story every time I mention that fishing spot.
My dad had drilled a small hole into a silver dollar and put it on my mom’s key chain. I’ve often thought about going in after it.
24. Robert’s Mom
When it came to my mother, she has guided me to be who I am as a fisherman. She would always tell we to fish instead of being on the couch. Even if I was grounded I could go fishing because she knows that fishing is that important to my life. She is the best mother ever. I thank her for the life lessons and the understanding of who I am.
25. Baby Girl’s Mom (Krystal)
It’s not my mom it’s me but I was pregnant in all these pictures and am a first time mom so my first mothers day! 🙂 I would proudly wear a tee that says reel mom’s fish! My mom doesn’t fish much 🙁 and my baby girl is too young to submit me haha but as soon as she’s old enough she will be fishing with us!
26. Steve’s Mom
I still remember you saying (you catch em I’ll clean & cook em).
Those were fun days, MOM.
I LOVE & MISS YOU.
27. Art’s Mom
My mom has always supported my fishing passion. I grew up along or rather in Lycoming Creek in Pennsylvania. I would fish forever if she wouldn’t yell for me to come home.
She was always coming home to nice fish being in our sink. She would get so excited about my big catches and saying she couldn’t believe the size of the fish I’d bring home.
My dad supported me as well but mom’s reactions to to my catches is all , as a teenager, I needed to become hooked on catching big fish for her. Mom will be 84 years old this year and I 51 but she’s still the first stop I make with any trophy fish or game.
Thanks Mom for unknown encouragement !
Your loving Son.
Art.

33. Allie’s Mom
Mother’s Day Fishing Contest Winner
This was not an easy contest to judge by any stretch of the imagination.
In fact, we spent quite a bit of time discussing how amazing these Mother’s Day submissions were.
But at the end of the day, we all voted that Parker’s Mom was the winner for the contest.
According to Parker’s notes, she has terminal cancer (less than a year to live), and the least we can do is declare her the winner, send along some Salt Strong gear and love, and of course some prayers.
Stay STRONG Mrs. Wells!
Here is Parker’s Mother’s Day Fishing Contest Submission:
My mom has been diagnosed with cancer and the doctors say she isn’t going to live till next year, but she loves fishing and so do I. Bonus Winner:
We also surprised Carson and his mom with a Salt Strong hat (one for he and his mom) for being the first person to submit for the contest.
So let that be a reminder for future Salt Strong Contests… the first person to submit/apply/sign-up will usually get a little surprise from us…
Thank you all again for taking the time to do this! It means a lot to us.
And thank you to ALL of the amazing MOMS out there!
You Rock!!!
