This Spinning Reel Surprised Me After 1 Year of Heavy Use

It’s easy to get caught up in the specs of an inshore reel, ball bearings, drag strength, weight in ounces, but the real test is how it performs after months of use on the water.
I’ve been fishing the Otis 2500 Spinning Reel for the past year, putting it through kayak trips, wading sessions, boat days, and thousands of casts. This reel has truly seen it all. Click below to see my key takeaways and if this reel is a good investment for you.

Why the Otis 2500 Stood Out
- Lightweight but tough – At just around 7 ounces, this reel held up to daily use without showing signs of breakdown.
- Smooth, reliable drag – Even after a year of abuse, the drag system stayed consistent without chatter or surging.
- Comfortable EVA foam handle – A small feature that makes a huge difference, giving the reel an ergonomic edge over others in the same class.
Final Thoughts
After thousands of casts, multiple fish species, and a year of daily use, the Otis 2500 proved itself as a workhorse reel. Whether you grab the reel on its own or go all-in with the full Salt Strong System Bundle, you’ll have a setup that’s been tested and trusted on the water.

Sounds like the Otis is a great option!
I had to reverse the handle for my daughter. She’s a lefty and didn’t like the location. She’s loving it now.
Thanks for the update !!
Great info and review on the Otis reel.
MAY BE ONE DAY
Thanks for the review Pat. It’s always nice to have a professional’s view.
Great product overview. Have never used the reverse reel option. Agree that it’s not needed for the fishing techniques I use.
Pat, I think you gave a pretty in-depth review and the reel seems to be a good one. I used to like and used Shimano reels for years, but I stopped buying them because Shimano did away with the anti reverse feature. I won’t buy a reel that doesn’t have that feature. I have a good collection of spinning reels (about 30 too many) and every one has the anti reverse switch.
To each their own. If you don’t use that feature, switch it off.
Great review, been wondering about the long term review… Thanks Pat! I prefer reels without reverse switch too! As for reel knobs… I really like cork and have changed all my reels to cork knobs… but that’s just me…
Well pat I got you beat on that ALL my shimano nasci 3000 series reels and I own 6 of them are ALL about 8 years old and along with my st croix rods that I pair them with i have caught litterally hundreds of fish with them they are as smooth as butter and only with a little lubrication every 3 trips and freshwater rinse after every use they perform flawlessly every single time they are about as reliable as my toyota tacoma pickup and everyone knows the quality that Toyota offers anyways like I commented about your report on saltstrongs slam stick spinning rod I stick with what works and both shimano and st croix tackle has been what I have used for at least 10 years now and I never planning on switching so thanks but no thanks im very happy with what I already own plenty of enough said
