This Inshore Lure Worked Extremely Well 100+ Miles Offshore [6 New PBs]

Ever wondered if an inshore shrimp lure can hang with live bait 100 miles offshore?
On a 39-hour Hubbard’s Marina trip with 25+ Insider Chapter members, I fished my favorite shrimp lure only — no live or cut bait like everyone else.
The result?
Everyone (including me) was shocked at how well the inshore gear worked (the biggest mangrove snapper I have ever seen, multiple personal best grouper, and many other species).
Here’s the video from the trip:

Conclusion
This trip proved that lures can compete with both live and cut bait offshore just like they do inshore.
The key was casting up-current and being able to feel the difference between bottom contact and strikes by using a very sensitive rod.
The Prawn USA lures continue to impress me for fooling big fish. They are lures I go to frequently inshore and when on nearshore reefs. And it’s now my #1 choice for when I make it out offshore again.

Also, please let us know if you’ve found any other lures that work great offshore. I’ll be happy to pick some up to test against the Prawn next time I get offshore.

Would the TFO 7’6” MH rod be sensitive enough for this? I know the Slot Machine is better but the CFO is putting a veto to it for now.
Great catching 🇺🇸
I seem to find crabs and catfish
Great day of fishing! That’s why I don’t bounce a lure off the bottom anymore with a traditional rod. the line has the tendency to wrap around the eyes of the rod. I only use spinning reel for that now on. Thanks for sharing.
If it were not for Luke lending me a rod and PPs, I might have been skunked. I was just not able to feel the bite with live ot dead bait on the bottom. But after learning the bottom with one drop, it was nearly every cast I had a fish.
Thanks, SS, for making this happen.
That sure was a fun time! You were on fire with the Prawn USA jig. I still can’t believe that the monster fish at the end of the day ended up being a dolphin:)
The fish that NEVER was!
Thanks again!
Luke, I have been waiting for this report. I was the person that missed the trip with the medical emergency. I was completely stoked to get the initial report. I live in the Panhandle so we only need to go about about 20 miles out to get into 100ft+ water. I have/purchased all the necessary equipment so am ready next time we go. One question – you said you were working up current from the boat and then and then retrieving back to the boat if I understand correctly. In a 30ft boat using a trolling motor that probably means casting from the front of the boat and retrieving back to the boat. I will post in the community section if successful.
Hey Bruce, we sure missed you on that trip. I’m jealous to see that you get deep water so close to shore.
If there is no wind or if the wind is going in the same direction as the current, then the cast would be past the front of the boat, so you could retrieve it back. But in many cases, the wind will be competing with the current, so you’ll need to make your best guess as to which way to try first so you can get a read on the exact direction of the current flow when the wind is impacting the position of the boat.
Luke “the Duke” shows us how it’s done!! Go Luke. Congrats on a nice job well done!
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Allan!
really enjoyed

What type of rod holder to lock them down during transportation
I normally just store them in vertical rod holders in the boat during transportation from spot to spot. On this boat, they head overhead horizontal rod holds for rod storage.
Very impressive that the prawn did so well!
Thanks Jon!
