It usually starts the same way.
You try something…
It doesn’t work…
So you change it.
Then change it again.
And somehow…
It just gets more confusing.
And that’s where most anglers go wrong.
Luke’s been there.
Boxes… trays… even full tubs of gear… all bought trying to figure it out.
Thinking the answer was just one more adjustment away.
It wasn’t.
Watch below for the redfish and trout cheat code Luke wishes he had learned years ago
FEATURED GEAR:
- Lure 1: 2.0 Paddletail
- Lure 2: Prawn Jr.
- Rigging 1: Hoss Helix Hook (1/8 oz, 3/0)
- Rigging 2: Hoss Weedless Round Eye Jighead (1/4 oz, 3/0)

KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- More adjustments can make things worse
- The answer isn’t where most anglers look
- It’s easy to go down the wrong path
- There’s a reason this works across the board
- Once it clicks, everything changes
FINAL THOUGHTS
Luke spent years adding more.
More gear.
More options.
More to think about.
And it never made things easier.
If anything…
It made things harder.
Until he realized what actually mattered most…
Being in the right place.
At the right time.
With something that simply gets in front of fish.
Less really is more.
That’s the part most anglers miss.

Do you cut off the tail or should you cut off the 1/5 inch from the head side of the shrimp?
Yes I’m guilty of buying to much stuff I know I’ve tried almost all my lures different poles you name it but the slam shady works well for small mouth and large mouth bass the top lures are a little tougher to me black ones and frogs do the best some day I’m going to be at the ocean and get too try all these lures there thanks for all the great information greatly appreciated all your shows are great and I learn so much from throwing my poles the right way and far again thank you
Another great POD Cast Joe and Luke. I wish that I found Salt Strong earlier and switched over to lures!
PS, any chance you can ID the commenters who are Life members. It would be nice to know and to be recognized.
I’m 80 guys, imagine all the crap I’ve accumulated. Every lure made times how many colors available for each lure. And how about the newest gadgets. Remember the Ph Monitor, the Color selector, the paper graph, I’m sure I’ve missed a couple dozen. I’m still waiting to catch a fish on the Dancin Eel! But I guess it’s part of the fun and the addiction! I’m going to have a heck of a garage sale, I’ll let you know the date! The best investment however has been my Lifer Membership with Salt Strong!
Good advice.. been throwing these two in the shallows , sea grass no real structure been skunked most days. Can you address speed of the retrieve, I.e. bouncing on bottom, “wait or hold” twitch, retrieve or just keep constant rhythm .. water temp in AM below 70 , afternoon above.
Great video and great approach – keep it simple! Joe, I literally feel your pain; I tore my bicep from my shoulder and it is now attached at my upper arm. Keep up the great work!!
Great session. I can’t wait to try the prawn for mangrove snapper. I have never experienced such bait stealers!
