It usually starts the same way.
You try something…
It doesn’t work…
So you change it.
Then change it again.
And somehow…
It just gets more confusing.
And that’s where most anglers go wrong.
Luke’s been there.
Boxes… trays… even full tubs of gear… all bought trying to figure it out.
Thinking the answer was just one more adjustment away.
It wasn’t.
Watch below for the redfish and trout cheat code Luke wishes he had learned years ago
FEATURED GEAR:
- Lure 1: 2.0 Paddletail
- Lure 2: Prawn Jr.
- Rigging 1: Hoss Helix Hook (1/8 oz, 3/0)
- Rigging 2: Hoss Weedless Round Eye Jighead (1/4 oz, 3/0)

KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- More adjustments can make things worse
- The answer isn’t where most anglers look
- It’s easy to go down the wrong path
- There’s a reason this works across the board
- Once it clicks, everything changes
FINAL THOUGHTS
Luke spent years adding more.
More gear.
More options.
More to think about.
And it never made things easier.
If anything…
It made things harder.
Until he realized what actually mattered most…
Being in the right place.
At the right time.
With something that simply gets in front of fish.
Less really is more.
That’s the part most anglers miss.

What happened to Pat
Where does the Polk County Tweaker come in compared the prawn and paddle tail?
great discusion guys…….thanks for the reminders!!!!
Right On guys. Thanks for that excellent commentary. I’d bet most of us have too much stuff. That kiss method really works but nooo! we need more! Since streamlining is the key, we might enjoy and have more time to fish and appreciate the nature of it all.
Just a note: We’re still collecting gear for “Fishing with Kids” at the St.Pete, Tampa, and Sports coast chapter meetings.in case any of us decide to streamline.
Fantastic video guys! Being relatively new to saltwater fishing I’ve felt like I’m mostly just chasing my tail with all the variables that exist, and not knowing which ones to focus on. This video has greatly simplified that. To put it in the perspective of a new SW fisherman, we watch Youtube videos, join Salt Strong, and listen to all the advice we can, and even at a high level we’re told we need to focus on:
– Location
– Lure or bait type, color, size
– Retrieval
– Time of day
– Tides
– Weather
There are others, but those are the main ones I can think of. Now consider that each of these is a variable, and you have to get them all to line up in the right way. To really bring this complexity into focus, take a coin and flip it. It only has two variables, and yet you could be wrong more than you’re right in guessing heads or tails!
What you’ve done here is vastly reduced the number of variables for me. I can’t wait to get out and try this approach!
Thanks for the information but clear so much for me. I’m having to go back to the Fishing school and review when I’m not catching fish regularly thank you.
thanks a lot
Yikes does this look familiar. We are all addicted to lures. We see a new design we buy it. And of course we buy it in 7 different colors.
Then we go out and fish the same old lures we’ve used for 10 or 65 years and that hot, new lure somehow works its way to the bottom of the storage locker on our boat. Then we find it at the end of the season (we have seasons up north where we can’t fish). And thank god for that season we can’t fish or we’d never find that new hot lure for years, if ever. Im 80, imagine how much never to be used crap i have.
The good news is, some of that stuff are now antiques. So now I can’t use them because who wants to throw an antique lure 30’ into a willow tree? Fishing is not for the weak of heart but definitely for the weak of brain. Just sayin.
Thanks so much guys for the info, I’m truly enjoying the club and all the great advice from other angler members too.
Thanks for your honest advice, especially when you’re backed by a tackle store.
