Do you want to know the top five things holding most anglers back from catching more redfish?
Then you’ve got to hear this!
We know these mistakes because we made them ourselves for many years, and it made fishing frustrating.
Some days we would be on fire, other days we would only catch catfish.
And the worst part was, we had no idea why…
Then, as we figured out how to finally stop making these mistakes and how to actually catch redfish, our results skyrocketed!
We were more consistent, we caught bigger fish, and we had more fun on the water!
But now as fishing coaches, we see these same mistakes get played out over and over again.
So to help you break free from making or believing these mistakes and misconceptions, Luke is revealing what they are and how to fix them in this powerful podcast episode.

Misconception #1: The same spots always hold redfish
One of the most popular mistakes anglers make is going to the same spots over and over again.
It starts like this:
They go to a spot for the first time and it’s on fire!
Maybe it’s good the next time they go, too.
But then the next few trips, it’s a dead zone.
And even though they’re not catching anything, they still go because they’re confident that fish are there based on their past experiences.
But here’s the problem: spots are fixed!
Fish move because of:
- Temperature
- Tides
- Wind
- Dolphins
- Human activity (other anglers, boaters, and jet skiers)
- And other reasons
These are changing all the time, so fish move all the time!
Because of this, if you focus on spots, you’ll be inconsistent at best.
Solution:
Take the trends into consideration.
Is it the middle of summer? Find an area with cooler water near an inlet or pass.
Is it dead winter right after a cold front? Find an area with warmer water that’s protected from the wind.
Knowing the trends and how to find fish based on them will make you a better, more consistent fisherman.
Misconception #2: Incoming tide is the best tide for redfish
This is partially true.
Fish aren’t sitting around, waiting on the perfect current direction and speed before they can start eating.
They’re moving around based on what the tides are doing, so you need to know where they’re moving.
Solution:
Go fishing when you can go fishing.
Yes, it’s best if you can fish when the current is moving, but you can’t catch any fish sitting at home on the couch.
Learn the trends and what fish do based on different tides, and apply those trends to the tide you’re fishing.
Misconception #3: You have to use live bait to catch redfish
Live bait works very well, but if you want to be a great angler, you need to learn how to catch redfish on artificial lures.
Here’s why:
- Sometimes you won’t have time to go catch or buy live bait
- Sometimes bait is really tough to come by (either on the water or in the bait shops)
- If you only fish once or twice a week and don’t know exactly where the bait and redfish are, then you could waste a lot of time looking for both
Lures let you cover more ground quicker, and fishing is a numbers game.
If you have one fish to cast to, then live bait is probably better.
But if you can put your lure in front of 100 more fish than you can get your live bait in front of, then lures are better.
And that’s exactly what using lures allows you to do.
Solution:
Get better at catching reds with lures!
In Redfish Secrets, you’ll see our favorite lures and how to use them to catch redfish.
Misconception #4: You need heavy tackle to land big fish
You don’t need a 4000 series reel to land big reds, and you don’t need 20 or 30 lb. braid either.
The majority of fishing we do is with a 2500 or 3000 series reel and 10 lb. braid.
This gear is plenty strong enough to catch nearly all the redfish you’ll come across, plus using lighter tackle lets you cast much farther and be more stealthy, which is one of the few things that will almost guarantee you’ll catch more fish.
Solution:
Scale back your tackle to be more stealthy on the water and increase your odds of catching redfish.
See our favorite gear for reds in Redfish Secrets.
Misconception #5: The only way to get better at fishing is to spend time on the water
If you want to get better at golf, what do you do?
Hire a coach!
You don’t magically develop a great swing just by practicing more because you may not be practicing the right mechanics.
The same is true with catching redfish.
If you want to become a better angler, you need a coach.
You need to learn what the pros are doing.
Yes, you could watch a bunch of YouTube videos and read fishing magazines, but the problem with them is that you only get snippets of what works.
Solution:
