Savage Gear Mudd Minnow Review (Pros, Cons, & Best Time To Use It)

Topwater lures are some of my favorite lures for redfish, snook and trout.

I love seeing them come up and smash the lure on the surface, plus it’s a great lure for finding fish since you can cover a lot of ground, and the fish always give away their location, whether you hook up or not.

There are dozens of different topwater lures available, but in this video, I’m going to review the Savage Gear Mudd Minnow.

I’ll not only unbox it and go over the specs and prices, but you’ll also learn:

  • why it’s particularly good for redfish
  • the slight modifications I like to make to the lure to catch more fish
  • when the best time of year and best conditions to use this lure are
  • and much more

If you’re looking for a new topwater lure to try, or if you’re considering the Savage Gear Mudd Minnow, check out the video below.

Here are the specs for this lure:

  • Length: 4.5″
  • Weight: 0.8 oz
  • Price: $10-15

It comes with a split ring on the front eye for you to tie your leader to.

The split ring helps give the lure some extra movement as you’re working it across the surface, but what I like to do is take the split ring off and just use a loop knot.

Sometimes the split ring will cause your leader to sit low in the water and snag the front hook.

A loop knot will have the same effect on the movement of the lure while minimizing the chances your leader will snag the front hook.

When To Use The Savage Gear Mudd Minnow

Since these lures are a little bigger than many other inshore topwater lures, they’re best for late summer and fall.

This is when the baitfish will be biggest, so a large lure like the Savage Gear Mudd Minnow works well.

And since it’s big and loud, this lure works better in choppy or windy conditions than flat calm conditions.

Finally, since it does sit low in the water it’s especially effective for catching redfish.

Unlike trout and snook, a redfish’s mouth angles downward, so they really need to get up high in the water to hit a topwater lure.

But the Mudd Minnow’s low-sitting back helps redfish get the lure in their mouth.

If you’re looking for a topwater lure that’s good in late summer or early fall in choppy conditions, you might want to consider the Savage Gear Mudd Minnow.

It’s also good for redfish since it sits low in the water, but it is on the more expensive end.
