It’s crab review time!
Last week, we reviewed the Chasebaits Crusty Crab, and today we have this review of the Savage Gear 3D TPE Crab.
I’ve been testing out this lure for a while now so that I can give an honest and thorough review.
I’ll share the pros and cons of these lures, my favorite scenarios to use them to catch sheepshead (and even grouper), plus I have some really cool underwater footage so you know what it looks like in action.
If you’re thinking about getting this Savage Gear crab lure, check out the review below.
P.S. We’re not affiliated with Savage Gear or any other company, so you can be sure this lure is totally unbiased.

If you want to see the exact lure I was using, the model number is TC-50-NP.
Now, let’s talk about the pros and cons.
Pros:
- More affordable than most other lifelike artificial crabs (a pack of 2 is about $6)
- Durable
- Virtually weedless
- Looks very real
- Additional bodies are sold separately
Cons:
- Most effective dragging across the bottom, but I catch most sheepshead pitching lures near bridges and dock pilings
- Does not mix well with other soft plastics (if you get one, make sure to keep it in its own compartment)
- Hard to find
How To Catch Sheepshead With The Savage Gear Crab
These lures work best when you’re fishing them on the bottom and covering ground, such as fishing the edges of jetties.
When you’re using them, you’ll feel several little taps, which are most likely pinfish and small snapper, so don’t set the hook yet.
When a sheepshead hits, you’ll feel a noticeable thump, so quickly set the hook then.
In addition to fishing jetties, I like to fish dock pilings and bridges to catch sheepshead.
Around these types of structure, I prefer the Chasebaits Crusty Crab because it has more action on the drop.
See the Chasebaits Crusty Crab review here.

Conclusion
I like these lures because they’re affordable, durable, and virtually weedless, and I especially like using them when I’m fishing jetties and other areas where sheepshead might be on the bottom.
But if you’re fishing mostly bridges and docks for sheepshead, I’d recommend the Chasebaits Crusty Crab.

Luke can you do a similar review of the new duratech version of this crab that just came out? It looks like it would do well on the drop now. Also how would you fish this if targeting sheepers standing from the jetties?
What’s the best way to store lures like these? Do they just have to be in a separate section of a box (ie not touching other plastics) or do they need to be in a separate box? I fish from a kayak and use Plano waterproof boxes. I’m worried there will get ruined. Thanks!
Yes, these lures just need to be stored in a way where they aren’t toughing any other soft plastic lures made from different material.
Luke what size leader lbs and length
I have been using 20 lb Ande mono leader (about 20 inches long) with a 10 lb braid mainline (PowerPro).
Great tips Luke
Thanks Joe! I’m still hoping to get my first sheepshead to hit a paddletail like you have somehow managed to perfect:)
Luke are the crabs scented?
These savage gear crabs are not scented. I have been putting Pro Cure on them (just the shrimp flavor because that’s all that I have).
I gotcha. I have the blue crab scented pro cure.
Another great vedio. Have tried the ChaseBaits crab with mixed results so I will Savage a try! Tight Lines Luke.
Thanks Richard! I hope you enjoy these crab lures. They aren’t something that I use every trip, but they are something that I always keep in my tackle box for when I see some nice sheepshead while I’m out on the water.
Luke would these artificial crabs also work for redfish?
Yes, these crab lures should work for redfish too.
But I prefer other lures that mimic baitfish or shrimp for redfish because they can be worked faster which enables me to cover more water and get the lure in front of more fish more consistently.
Great video. Nice grouper, hanging with the sheepies.
Thanks Charles! It was cool to see the grouper catch, but I was bummed at the time because I thought I had a monster sheepshead based on how hard it was fighting:)
Great video. I found a pack of these in one of my boxes of gear. I couldn’t find videos of them for sheepshead. I look today and you made one. Talk about timing.
Perfect timing!!!
