Jig Techniques That Catch 8+ Species (27 Fish in One Day!)
- By: Luke Simonds

If you’ve ever struggled to get consistent strikes while fishing nearshore, you’re not alone. It can feel like you’re doing everything right—perfect bait, perfect location—but the fish just won’t commit.
That’s exactly why I’m excited to share a retrieve technique that’s been a working extremely well nearshore.
In just one day, using a single lure and a simple retrieve, I managed to land 27 fish from 8 different species on natural ledges and reefs.
And here’s the best part—this isn’t rocket science. It’s all about how you present your lure.
This video will show you the exact jigging techniques to use in order to trigger strikes from fish that are holding near deep structure… as you’ll see, it works on a wide variety of species.
Equipment Used:
- Rod: Slot Machine 7’6″ Medium Fast
- Reel: TD Sol MQ 2500
- Line: 10 lb J-Braid 8 Grand
- Leader: 20 lb Ande Mono
- Lure: Prawn USA Jr. rigged on 3/0 Weedless Football Jig 1/2 oz
- Scent: Dr Juice: Saltwater Slam
Conclusion
For many years, I thought that I had to have live bait in order to catch fish when going to nearshore/offshore ledges and reefs.
But I have been shocked at how productive lures can be when using the right lures with the right retrieve.
This exact same jigging style and lure can of course catch much bigger fish too… click here to see a trip I had at a nearshore public reef off of Tampa (aka – it gets a ton of fishing pressure) in which we caught nice cobia, snook, flounder, and a variety of other species.

Nice!
Awesome video. Love fishing structure and using that set up. Even though it’s 30* here, you get my adrenaline running to get out there. Appreciate it.
Awesome video and nice catch Luke
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Pablo!
Great report Luke! What was the depth that you were wishing in?
We were in depths ranging from 40 ft to 45 ft that trip.
What a great day on the water Luke. Fun to watch.
Thanks Larry! This was a very fun video to film and edit…sure is fun having no idea what species will hit next.
Fun video Luke! Alas I have to go further than my boat hull will comfortably allow unless super calm seas to get to that kind of structure but when I have the set up you are using has been great. Typically will fish on bottom with same set up you were using but I also chum and have a rod and eel set up ready for cobia on the surface. The power prawn on weedless Hoss jighead has been super effective for me.
Glad to see that you’ve been getting some nice cobia on the Prawn lures too. This deep water bouncing technique shown in this video works great under bridges too.
Love bottom fishing. However we need to fish 70-100 feet off Charleston and need 3-6 oz egg sinkers to get bottom because of significant current. Would you use the same weed less set up but Carolina rig with the hook on a leader from a swivel?
I have tried it with a Carolina rig while bridge fishing, and the results were not nearly as good as it was with the jighead. So if I wanted to fish a prawn jig in that depth, I’d go with the larger one (Prawn USA OG) and I’d rig it on the 2 oz Hoss weedless jighead that has a 5/0 sized hook… cast it up-current, and it’ll definitely be able to get down to the bottom while you jig it back.
I’ll try. Thanks.
Luke, at what depth do you recommend going from 1/2oz to 3/4oz football head?
Depends on the current speed… I generally like to go up to 3/4 oz once I get past 30 ft of water. But we don’t currently have the 3/4 oz size for the 3/0 sized hook that pairs with the Prawn USA Junior lures… that’ll be added in soon.
Incredible video Luke. What angler wouldn’t want a day like you just had. Great tips, and keep them coming!
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Lou!
This is like, “The REST of the Story” after seeing you in the background of the first video! Great demo.
Thanks Paul! Glad to see that you enjoyed this secondary report from this trip. It sure was a fun day!
